This (day) marks the 40th anniversary of the untimely passing of Karen Carpenter. The singer, whose worldwide popularity has not waned for 53 years, was a month shy of her 33rd birthday when her heart stopped beating the morning of Feb. 4, 1983. Her death was attributed to the effects of anorexia nervosa, from which she had suffered for several years.

American jazz pioneer, composer, keyboardist and bandleader Chick Corea passed away on Tuesday, according to a post on his Facebook page. He was 79 years old. The Facebook statement says Corea died from “a rare form of cancer which was only discovered very recently.” Corea was the fourth-most-nominated artist in the history of the Grammys, with 65 nominations, winning 23 times. He also earned 3 Latin Grammy Awards, the most of any artist in the Best Instrumental Album category.

A federal judge Monday dismissed a lawsuit by Michigan Republican groups seeking to block a new state redistricting commission. The ruling is the latest legal setback for Republicans, who earlier this year failed to win an injunction that would prevent the formation of the commission, which they contend is unconstitutional. The decision Monday — by U.S. District Court Judge Janet Neff, appointed by GOP President George W. Bush — is a blow to state Republicans who fought against the implementation of the redistricting commission, which was created in 2018.

Wednesday, August 16, 2017 marks 30 years since the Flight 255 disaster in Romulus. Northwest Airlines Flight 255, headed for Phoenix, crashed shortly after takeoff from Detroit Metro Airport. The plane was just clearing the runway at 8:46 p.m. when it tilted slightly. The left wing clipped a light pole, and the damaged airliner sheared the top off a rental car building. The plane then crashed onto Middlebelt Road, just north of Wick Road. The crash killed 156 people.
