A burglar took a picture of himself on his victim's cell phone, then left the phone behind, Suffolk police said. They are asking the public for help in identifying him. The burglary was reported to police the first week of June in the 200 block of Holbrook Arch. The burglar tried to make a call with a cell phone in the residence, and took a picture of himself flashing two fingers, police said. He left the phone behind. City spokeswoman Debbie George, a former police lieutenant, said it's common for suspects in crimes to make photos and video of themselves...

JAMESTOWN – He’s the president, he can do what he wants. On Sunday, George Bush wanted to conduct a 400-piece symphony playing at the 400th anniversary celebration of the first permanent English settlement in America, at Jamestown. Midway through a rousing rendition of “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” Bush took the baton from JoAnn Falletta, musical director of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. While the Anniversary Park crowd of several thousand roared, the president led the musicians for two minutes without a hitch. Bush pointed to all sections of the orchestra, which included young musicians from around the country. He implored...

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Michael Schiavo, who was at the center of a passionate national end-of-life debate when his brain-damaged wife, Terri, died in March, endorsed Democrat Tim Kaine for governor Wednesday. "I have seen firsthand what can happen when a governor disagrees with a single citizen. In Florida, Gov. Jeb Bush abused the power of his office in an attempt to replace my personal family decisions with his own opinions and political grandstanding," Schiavo wrote a six-paragraph statement distributed by a Democratic political consulting firm in Miami. Conservatives vilified Schiavo for ordering the removal of the feeding tube that...

A nationwide poll on father-daughter relationships reveals that many American dads think they have strong relationships with their daughters but are not an important factor in determining their health and happiness.

Commissioned by the national nonprofit organization Dads and Daughters (DADS), the Roper poll found that 74 percent of fathers described their relationship with their daughters as either "excellent" or "very good." However, only 33 percent of all the fathers surveyed think they are influential in their daughters' lives. About 45 percent of fathers with girls younger than 17, and 29 percent of those with daughters 18 to 25 said their "active involvement is vital to her health and well-being." The number dropped to 26 percent for fathers with daughters older than 25.

Are You a Democrat, Republican or Texan? You're walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children. Suddenly, a dangerous looking man with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, raises the knife, and charges. You're carrying a Smith &Wesson revolver and you are an expert shot. You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family. What do you do? Democrat's Answer: Well, that's not enough information to answer the question. Does the man look poor or oppressed? What drove him to the level of desperation he feels now,...

I wanted to thank everyone that said a prayer for my Dad last night and today. He came through his surgery with flying colors. His color is great and will be moving to a regular room tomorrow sometime. My mother was comforted and given strength by reading your comments that were posted last night. Pediatric offices and emergency rooms in Hampton Roads were jammed Friday with parents anxious to make sure their children's fevers and runny noses weren't life-threatening, as health investigators continued to study the unexplained deaths of five children in five days. ``I took off work to bring my daughter in,'' said Mashiah Mitchell, who brought his 4-year-old daughter, Asha, to Renaissance Pediatrics in Chesapeake because she had a fever. ``I got alarmed when I heard the news about the children dying.'' The fears were triggered by an investigation launched Thursday by the Virginia Department of Health into the deaths of four...

I wanted to like Helen Thomas. I really did. The so-called dean of the White House press corps has been my hero since I was a girl. If not for Helen Thomas, and a few other pushy women like her, I might be writing a society column for The Pilot. Like the rest of America, I got my first glimpse of Ms. Thomas in the early 1960s, at President Kennedy's televised press conferences. I was only in grade school then, but already I knew I wanted to a newswoman. Like Nellie Bly. And Helen Thomas. Ms. Bly I'd read about...
  • Terrorism acccusations raise hackles at PETA

NORFOLK -- PETA doesn't let political correctness get in the way of a good ad campaign, be it a menacing Ronald McDonald wielding a bloody butcher knife or ``Got Beer?'' billboards mocking the milk industry. But now the attack dogs are PETA's critics, and they're portraying the world's largest animal-rights group as an agent of domestic terrorism. The mention of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in the same sentence as al-Qaida, by critics and on Capitol Hill, has the fur flying at the organization's waterfront headquarters here. There is even a push to revoke PETA's tax-exempt status because...

NORFOLK -- Usually, elementary school graduation speakers line up somewhere between sixth-grade teacher and retired assistant principal. But on Friday, Tanners Creek lured the Navy's first black Master Diver, made famous when his life was featured on the big screen in 2000. Thanks to Devisa Averett -- the mother of an 11-year-old ``graduate'' and a daily classroom volunteer -- the school's guest of honor was the inspiration for Cuba Gooding Jr.'s character in the movie ``Men of Honor.'' ``She didn't even go through my agent,'' Carl Brashear joked before going on stage in the cafeteria. ``And when she pulled up...

VIRGINIA BEACH -- A 10-year-old Richmond boy, wrestled from the jaws of a shark by his father, died of his wounds early Sunday -- the first such fatality in the United States this year, and the first shark attack in Virginia in almost 30 years. David Peltier died at 3:45 a.m. at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk, the third hospital to treat him in the hours since the 6 p.m. Saturday attack.
