About 4,000 workers have been hired since 2012 as Electric Boat builds two submarines a year, a coveted expansion of the fleet that was eclipsed by shifting military policies at the end of...

Drunken behavior during a port visit has led to the dismissal of another Navy commander and three other top officers, days after the leader of the USS Stennis carrier group was sent back to Bremerton. The Navy hasn't said much about why they've removed Rear Admiral Charles Gaouette from his command October 27. They are conducting an internal investigation involving his judgment. The Navy is offering more explanation about the commander of the USS Vandegrift, which is a frigate based in San Diego that was built at the Todd Shipyards. This frigate was not with the Stennis carrier group. Vandegrift...

For many Canadians, the prospect of a lost–or even delayed–National Hockey League season is heartbreak enough. Now it turns out, it also might high-stick the country’s economy. Associated Press Montreal Canadiens’ Colby Armstrong, left, and Ryan White take a break during an informal training session last month at the team’s training facility in Brossard, Quebec. From his desk at one of Canada’s big banks, economist and hockey fan Doug Porter has been crunching numbers, as labor strife between players and owners threatens to scupper the NHL season. J. Christopher Stevens, the American ambassador to Libya who was killed in an assault on a diplomatic mission there last week, was happy to gossip, but was revered for listening. A northern Californian with a toothy grin, he had a passion for the Arab world and its language, and he went out of his way to use it, whether with officials or shopkeepers, in an effort to show respect. In his willingness to allow others to be heard, even when he had an important message to impart, Mr. Stevens was an unusual American diplomat, friends and colleagues say. He allowed...

Bergevin, 46, will replace the fired Pierre Gauthier, who was let go near the end of the 2011-12 season, and become the 17th GM in Canadiens history. The Canadiens not only missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season, but finished last in the Eastern Conference and No. 28 in the League with a 31-35-16 record. A Montreal native, Bergevin has spent the past seven seasons in Chicago's front office. This past...

NASHVILLE -- The Nashville Predators announced on Tuesday morning that they will hold top-six forwards Andrei Kostitsyn and Alexander Radulov out of Game 3 of their Western Conference Semifinal series with the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday (9 p.m. ET, CNBC, TSN) for an unspecified violation of team rules. "The Nashville Predators have a few simple rules centered around doing the right things," general manager David Poile said in a statement. "We have always operated with a team-first mentality and philosophy. Violating team rules is not fair to our team and their teammates." Poile expanded upon that statement in a brief...

Todd McLellan stopped short of labeling the Sharks' regular season a disappointment. "We got where we wanted to go," the coach said Saturday night after the Sharks were eliminated by the St. Louis Blues in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series. "We wanted to get into the tournament." But whenever a franchise loses its standing as one of the NHL elite, it's a disappointment. So now what? The angriest segment of the fan base has been calling for a roster makeover for weeks, and the volume will only increase after a five-game playoff stay that was the shortest in...

Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville paid the price Thursday for criticizing officials after Game 3 of the Western Conference quarterfinals. After the officials failed to call a penalty on the Coyotes' Raffi Torres following the winger's hit on the Hawks' Marian Hossa that sent Hossa to the hospital during the first period Tuesday night, Quenneville said: "I saw exactly what happened, it was right in front of me and all four (officials) missed it, The refereeing tonight was a disgrace." The NHL lowered the boom on Quenneville, fining the coach $10,000 "for public comments critical of the officiating." A day...

PHILADELPHIA -- Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby summed up the feelings between his team and the Philadelphia Flyers pretty succinctly after Game 3 of the teams' Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series. "I don't like any guy on their team there," he said. The feeling appears to be mutual, as Sunday's game featured three fights, three game misconducts, four 10-minute misconducts and a match penalty among the 38 penalties totaling 158 minutes. When it was finished, the Flyers had a 8-4 victory and a three-games-to-none stranglehold in the series, which continues Wednesday night. The physical play started early. Just 2:39 into the...
