Amazing! A year and a half later and we still see the same ignorant, uninformed, outrageous, comments from the same ignorant, uninformed buffoons on these threads. Where do you people get your information? All of New Orleans is not corrupt. We are not all on welfare.Crime ( murders ) happens only in a few neigborhoods involving drug dealers.Same as in your own towns. Nowhere near all of us are sitting on our butts waiting for Uncle Sam to rebuild our homes. Sure, congress appropriated billions of dollars for rebuilding , where is the money? RED TAPE! They still have it! They won’t let go of it. It doesn’t do us any good sitting in HUD’s bank accounts in DC. You say, “why don’t they help themselves without the fed’s money?”. How can we when the entire infrastructure of the city was destroyed. Half of the city’s tax base is gone. Why do I bother? You people would rather send your hard earned money to rebuid Iraq where they try to kill those there trying to help them then to help your own fellow tax paying American citizens in South Louisiana.You people have no clue as to what you’re talking about. To hell with all of you.

One recommendation I would have for you is stop reading threads like this one. Most people who post about New Orleans are talking out their asses and don't have a clue as to what happenned here and what the conditions are today. As a previous poster said, crime here is limited to small areas of the city and are committed mostly by drug dealers fighting turf wars. That is no different than any other big city.New Orleans is so much more then just the French Quarter. Try to enjoy all of it. Just be carefull to stay out of the darker parts of town. If you come to New Orleans with an open mind and a healthy appetite you will go home different then when you came. Welcome.

What I didn't do was move into an area built almost entirely below sea level smack in the middle of Hurricane Alley and which just happened to have the arguably most corrupt and incompetent city, county, and State governments in the nation.

I was born in the heart of N.O. and the city that I knew and loved is dead and gone. I don't know who to blame more...

Easy...Blame the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. They destroyed New Orleans with their incompetence in designing and building the levees. It still surprises me after 16 monthes how little people on these boards know about what really happened in New Orleans. Or what is going on now. All you people see are the winers and slugs on the main stream media and think all people here are like them. They are not. Most people are struggling every day just to get back to some form of normalcy. The crime you see on TV in ENTIRELY black on black crime perpertrated over terf wars and drugs except one white women who was murdered by a black intruder into her house. All the crime is happening in a rather small part of town.New Orleans is no more dangerous than any other big city but you wouldn't know it by watching TV. Give New Orleans a chance to survive for crying out loud. We are not all criminals and welfare slugs.

You must be new to Free Republic. There is damn little compassion for us here in New Orleans by these people on this web site. I have given up trying to convince them of exactly what you spoke about. They don't care. They sit there in their cumphy homes going about their lives totally ignorant of what they talk about. But that's OK. I can't wait to extend to them the same curtousy that they have shown us. Hang in there, we'll get through this. All things must pass.

What if your house got hit by lightning tonight and burned to the ground? Aren't you just as much in need as someone who got flooded out by Katrina?

Yes you would be in need. But a more proper annalogy would be if your entire city, and all your infrastructure were burned to the ground. All your grocery stores, schools, health clinics, hospitals, businesses(your job),electrical generating plants, gas stations,sewerage lines, water lines,churches and other support structures were also burned to the ground. All your neighbors and family were scattered to the wind. That would be a more appropriate comparrison.

No. What you and the rest of the country saw was a very small part of the city's low life acting like they belonged in a third world cesspool. The other 99.9% of New Orleans citizens were just as outraged and embarrassed as the rest of you. There were riots in Chicago and Detroit after their teams won the NBA championships. No one thought these cities were cesspools because of them.

According to the Internet Movie Data Base, Buffy was played by a girl named Anisa Jones who died of a drug overdose in 1976 at the age of 18.

Driving deeper does not automatically mean more strength--it all depends on the soil profile.

That's exactly the point. The soil profile should have made it obvious that they should drill deeper. The sheet piles ended in the middle of a pocket of peat soil, a mixture of decaying biological matter. The canal bottom was 18 feet deep and the piles were only driven to 17 feet. The Engineering firm that did the soil samples called for a depth of 35 feet but was overuled by the ACof E. Corps engineers in Vicksburg, Mississippi questioned the designs, but the local Corps project leader again overuled. Water seeped under the piles and eroded away the base of the levee. The levees were not overtopped. I have talked to several witnesses who said the water level was a couple of feet below the top of the wall just before they broke. I am talking about the 17th street canal levee that is about 2 miles from my house. I am sitting in a 1 bedroom apartment as I type this because my home and everything that I worked 30 years to earn was destroyed when that levee broke. Perhaps it is too strong to say the feds destroyed my city but it is hard to amagine it was the best thing to happen to New Orleans. An investigating engineer from LSU called it the worst Engineering failure in the nation's history. I'll tend to take his word for it.

Hey dude, I'm not talking about the response after the hurricane, federal or state. I'm definately no Blanco supporter and I in no way blame George W Bush. I blame the Corps of Engineers. Blanco and Nagin were nowhere around when the levee walls were designed and built. If you want to believe I'm a simpering waste, go ahead. I am forced to believe you are a.... well I won't go there.

Weather people 'got out of Dodge' as you say had nothing to do with the city's current woes. 90% of the residents got out.Only the dumbest of dumb stayed. The city's current woes are because the levee walls failed.
