  • There’s no getting around Jesus’ teaching on the age of the earth

“No, he is speaking to a future event, when the Sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give her light, when the mountains and hills will tremble.”

    By referencing the past event:

    From the Amplified Bible:

[In a vision Jeremiah sees Judah laid waste by conquest and captivity.] I looked at the land, and behold, it was [as at the time of creation] waste and vacant (void); and at the heavens, and they had no light.

“I think you may find more information in studying the words tohu and bohu in Hebrew.”

From Strongs, to’-hoo and bo’-hoo defined, used in both Genesis 1:2 and Jeremiah 4:23:

    to’-hoo
From an unused root meaning to lie waste; a desolation (of surface), that is, desert; figuratively a worthless thing; adverbially in vain: - confusion, empty place, without form, nothing, (thing of) nought, vain, vanity, waste, wilderness.

    bo’-hoo
From an unused root (meaning to be empty); a vacuity, that is, (superficially) an undistinguishable ruin: - emptiness, void.

“I find ‘gap theory’ to be a tired extrapolation with very little evidence, whose sole purpose is to shoehorn evolution into Christianity.”

If there’s any gap theorists pushing evolution then they’re not reading the bible correctly either, although I have yet to see many promoting evolution theory. Most do not. Evidence you say? What I find tiring are buffoons who deny scientific evidence that the earth is older than 6,000 years old, and believe that man walked along side dinosaurs. Read the Bible correctly and you will see that it matches that evidence.

“The whole passage is pointing to future, not past.”

In the passage Jeremiah is pointing to the future by making reference to a past event. “without for an void” sound familiar? read Genesis 1:2.

Which is not the way God initially created the Earth: Creating the Earth and then saying the creation is without form and void is a contradiction:

    Isaiah 45:18 -

For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.

When lucifer fell from heaven there was great destruction. Jeremiah 4:23-28 describes the chaos and destruction that occurred. So the exact age of the earth is unknown, and an old earth does not contradict the bible. In Genesis God created man, replenished the earth and made things right again. Note that as a result of this event the heavens were dark and there was no life remaining, unlike the Noah flood where Noah, his family and the animals on the Arc survived:

    Jeremiah 4:23-28 -

“I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light. I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly. I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled. I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and by his fierce anger. For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end. For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black: because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it.”

Jeremiah 4:23-28 describs the chaos and destruction that occurred sometime before Genesis 1:2. Note that as a result of this event there was no life remaining, unlike the Noah flood where Noah, his family and the animals on the Arc survived:

Incorrect. The Earth was not created by God in vain without form and void: Chaos followed when Lucifer was cast out of heaven with a third of the Angels.

    Isaiah 45:18 -

“For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.”

“But whatever you feel, the Earth is not 6,000 years old”

The Bible of course never claims it is. The Earth BECAME formless and void:

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth”

So far so good....Then something happened:

“And the earth “was” “translated from Hayah meaning became” without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”

The earth was ruined by the fall of Satan. The remaining verses after Genesis 1:2 describes God fixing and replenishing the earth and making things right again.

“Whenever I hear Osteen or others preach the prosperity gospel, I am reminded of Jesus’ advice to the young man who lived honorably and wondered what more he could do to achieve an even better spiritual state. Jesus did not tell him to claim and enjoy the first century equivalent of “promotion[s], good breaks, houses, businesses, contracts.” Instead, he advised him to “go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” (Mark 10: 21-22”

The author might try reading a little further into the chapter to see what the result would’ve been had the young man simply trusted God:

    Mark 10:30 -

“But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.”

Great prosperity was available to him at that time, even more wealth than he had possessed, and it wasn’t about the young mans own works to achieve an even better spiritual state, but that God would provide for him through trust and faith. God was prepared to bless him hundredfold more had he simply trusted God over his own wealth.

“Romans was written to those called to be saints.”

“Those folks were already born again.”

In Romans 9-10 Paul was addressing the issue of Jews who were rejecting the gospels and missing out on salvation. Also, their unbelief was effecting the faith of others. Chapter 11 Paul shows those unbelievers what God has available for them.

Rom 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Rom 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Rom 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

Rom 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

Rom 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

“Written to those already born again”

Incorrect. The specific scripture is clear and the intention is to inform those who are not saved about how to obtain salvation. Otherwise there would be no need to state “though shalt be saved” if it were targeted specifically to those who were already born again and salvation had already occurred.

In Mark 1:8 John talks about the baptism to come, not water baptism but baptism in the spirit through Christ - “I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.”

“Know ye not, that as many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his DEATH? Therefore we are BURIED with him INTO DEATH..”

Again, and if you read through the rest of the chapter you’ll see that it’s spiritual baptism being discussed here with the risen Christ. The old water baptism was simply symbolic of the greater reality of the true baptism of the Holy Spirit. Water baptism makes for a nice ceremony, but it’s not what gets one saved.

“That reasoning is another example of people twisting the scriptures to their own destruction, as Peter warned of.”

Your denial of the meaning of Romans 10:9 comes to mind.

“Baptism in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins is NOT a work of the Law. God remits the sins, not man.”

Water baptism IS a work of the old law, the finished works of Jesus Christ is what saves, for those who believe. Spirit baptism as Acts 1:5 states.

    Romans 10:9 -

“if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

    Paul:

    1 Corinthians 1:17

Except we’re no longer subject to Mosaic law:

Galations 3:13- Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

Galations 3:14 - That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Zuriel, you’re quoting in many cases scripture in the wrong administration and influenced by religious legalism, and in denial of clear scripture as to what true baptism now is in this administration:

    Hebrews 9:10 -

“Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.”

Here, we see stated the old rituals done away with at the reform “Day of pentecost/administration of grace” which began in Acts 1.

    Act 1:5 -

“For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.”

    Act 18:25-26 -

This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.

    26 -

“And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.”

Here’s another example of how water baptism was still being practiced early on in the Church because of tradition. Like Paul, those people began to realize the true baptism of the new administration.

And when Paul had met with Apollos’ disciples, he was not satisfied with water baptism and taught them to be baptized into the name of Jesus Christ!

    Romans 10:9 -

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

    Rom 10:10 -

“For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

Water baptism was part of the old law and was replaced on the day of Pentecost:

    Acts 19:1-6

    (1) While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples

    (2) and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

    (3) So Paul asked them, “Then what baptism did you receive?” “John’s baptism,” they replied.

    (4) Paul said, “John’s baptism was [note the past tense] a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”

    (5) On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.

    (6) When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

Even John discusses the new baptism that was to come:

    Luke 3:16

John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”

And here’s Peter correcting his earlier mindset that water was required for baptism:

    Act 11:16

Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

“Christ’s payment is beneficial to those who believe, not those who disbelieve and reject God.”

Yes, for believers, not unbelievers, see post # 68.

    Don’t forget Hebrews 10:26:

“For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins”

Yes, there are no more old covenant Leviticus sin sacrifices, as Christ paid the price for us, for those who believe. Everyone sins including willfully, and anyone denying that is a liar. And of course the less we sin the better, but God does not expect us to be perfect, rather he wants us to be humble and diligently seek him out when we are in need or struggling with sin.

“Those who reject this command against sexual immorality have rejected God”

That does not do away with Christ’s payment for us on the cross.

“On the other hand, if they continue in their sinful behavior, they will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”

All continue sinful behavior, whether one sin’s differently then another is irrelevant.

    Romans 6: 1-23:

1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

    EPHESIANS 2:

8 FOR BY GRACE ARE YE SAVED THROUGH FAITH; AND THAT NOT OF YOURSELVES: IT IS THE GIFT OF GOD:

9 NOT OF WORKS, LEST ANY MAN SHOULD BOAST.

    1 JOHN 1:

7 BUT IF WE WALK IN THE LIGHT, AS HE IS IN THE LIGHT, WE HAVE FELLOWSHIP ONE WITH ANOTHER, AND THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST HIS SON CLEANSETH US FROM ALL SIN.

8 IF WE SAY THAT WE HAVE NO SIN, WE DECEIVE OURSELVES, AND THE TRUTH IS NOT IN US.

    Galatians 2:21:
I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain

Act 1:5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
