A weekend rainstorm that drenched Southern California and triggered hundreds of freeway crashes will disappear by the afternoon and make way for cool, autumn weather on Thanksgiving, the National Weather Service said Monday. Over Sunday and Monday, the storm dumped more than two inches of rain in San Luis Obispo County and more than an inch at Brentwood’s Getty Center in Los Angeles County, where a surge in car crashes left freeways intermittently jammed, authorities said.

Tesla has scored extremely poorly in terms of reliability in the latest survey published by Consumer Reports. The 2016 Annual Auto Reliability Survey was taken out by Lexus, with Toyota, Buick, Audi and Kia in the top five spots. Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat and Ram on the other hand – all from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles – took honours for worst-in-show, which had around 500,000 respondents in this year’s survey.

Christina Ferguson, 32, was arrested on Oct. 17 after disrupting what was actually a meeting of the Tomorrow River Conservation Club. The first full trailer for The Grand Tour was released today and the new programme which features the former Top Gear stars is set to be their most thrilling show to date. Presenters Jeremy Clarkson, 56, Richard Hammond, 46, and James May, 53, all left the BBC show last year and started filming the upcoming series on Amazon Prime. The pulsating trailer shares similarities with a Hollywood blockbuster and shows a tank blowing up a car, a tense helicopter chase and Clarkson speeding past on a jet ski. And it seems the trio - who agreed to make the new...

Whether it's by the use of tiny car-lifting robots or totally spherical wheels, the idea of a car that can move effortlessly sidewise is an endlessly appealing one. Parallel parking becomes a dream, parking garage management becomes a piece of cake. And out of all the ways to make that dream come true, these "Liddiard Wheels" seem like a pretty compelling one. Designed by one William Liddiard, the wheels are similar to the kind of "omni wheels" you'll find on some robots and heavy machinery. The difference with these is that they are on an actual car, they have one...

Highway express lanes provide a faster trip for carpoolers, people who drive low-emission cars, and solo travelers who are willing to pay more.ThatÂ’s the idea, anyway. But as Americans drive more miles than ever before, express lanes are facing a challenge: they are too popular. So many drivers of all kinds are using the lanes that it is increasingly difficult for transportation officials to keep them speedy. For solo drivers, the tolls in express lanes typically vary based on demand. In some places, drivers pay more during peak travel times, and in others prices go up as more cars enter the lane....

Since its enactment in 1973, Michigan’s no-fault automobile insurance law has been blamed for steep increases in premiums paid by drivers. Michigan car insurance premiums are twice the national average. Previous efforts to reform the law failed to gain a consensus, but several legislators are pursuing changes they claim will bring automobile insurance costs more in line with the $1,325 per year national average. The average cost of insurance for Michigan motorists is $2,738 per year. Proponents of these changes argue that more affordable premiums would reduce the number of uninsured drivers in the state. $1,325 national average $2,738 Michigan...

In a February 2010 speech, then-Gov. Jennifer Granholm described how Michigan was becoming a center for advanced battery production, which would diversify the state’s economy. Granholm characterized the state as “becoming a world capital for advanced batteries,” and boasted that the industry was “projected to create almost 62,000 new jobs" in the state. "We have a whole industry sprouting up all over the state with respect to the battery," Granholm said in 2010. As of 2015, Michigan had 918 battery manufacturing jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That's even after billions of dollars granted to this industry...

This 1962 Shelby 260 Cobra known as the CSX 2000 just commanded $13.75 million at auction. ... Not long ago, many experts were projecting gas prices above $5 per gallon for the U.S. President Barack Obama said “with more research and incentives” there would soon be 1 million electric plug-in cars on the road. The top executive at General Motors claimed the company could sell 120,000 Chevy Volts in a year. That was in 2011, when GM’s electric plug-in car was still in its infancy. Former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm very publicly bought her own Chevy Volt after telling the media that electric car batteries represented the “beginning of new Michigan.” That didn't happen, despite massive spending...

Falling prices at the pump have given motorists reason to rejoice continuously over the last year and a half, but they’re not good news for everyone. At least, not for the people who are about fuel economy. The latest sales-weighted fuel economy ratings report by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute revealed that in June, the value of the indicator was 25.3 miles per gallon, down from 25.4 mpg in May. Now, that’s not a huge dip, as Road Show author Andrew Krok notes, but it follows a pattern of declining fuel economy that parallels the decline in gas...
