ByBRAD CRAWFORD Jul 9, 8:02 AM Which college football teams are the most complete and talent-rich heading into the 2018 season? Preseason magazine guru Phil Steele, who studies rosters and interviews coaches 12 months out of the year, believes he has an idea. He has compiled his annual 'Preseason Top 40' rankings, a list that's usually one of the most accurate nationally. Steele notes two important guidelines about this year's rankings, which for this exercise have been trimmed to the first 25 teams. "My preseason rankings are not my power rankings," Steele writes. "These rankings take into account the totality...

Major-college football experienced its largest per-game attendance drop in 34 years and second-largest ever, according to recently released NCAA figures. Attendance among the 129 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams in 2017 was down an average of 1,409 fans per game from 2016. That marked the largest drop since 1983 when average attendance declined 1,527 fans per game from 1982. The 2017 FBS average of 42,203 fans per game is the lowest since 1997. That average attendance drop marked the second-sharpest decline since the NCAA began keeping track of college football attendance in 1948. For the first time in history, average...

At least one person wasn’t happy to see Donald Trump in attendance for Monday's national championship game. Alabama running back Bo Scarbrough appeared to yell “F--k Trump!” before taking the field, in a video captured by Sporting News. Scarbrough, who wears No. 9, can be seen in the back of the video appearing to shout the obscenity.

Any mystery about Alabama's runner-up trophy from last season was answered Thursday. It exists no longer. A video posted from the Instagram account of Crimson Tide receiver Jerry Jeudy shows strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran destroying the hardware. He raised the trophy above his head and threw it to what appears to be the locker room floor. Cochran finished off the remains with a sledgehammer. The language was not suited for all ages. Alabama lost 35-31 to Clemson in last season's national championship game. The Tide plays Georgia on Monday night for this season's title. Watch the full video...

The chant boomed out early in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, and then again late, and a third time even later for good measure. And although it’s enough to trigger a collective gag reflex in 39 states plus several U.S. territories, it’s a fact-based champion’s chant. “S-E-C! S-E-C!” the Alabama fans thundered, when the final score of the Rose Bowl was announced and league brethren Georgia had advanced to the College Football Playoff title game.

The decline of NFL viewership has rightfully been one of the biggest sports media stories of the past two years but less has been written about where college football stands in aggregate viewership. College football is a tougher game to analyze for ratings experts given a number of factors including the innate regionalism of the sport, and the massive number of national windows between ESPN’s multiple networks, Fox and FS1, CBS and CBSSN, NBC and NBCSN and others. One of the best analysts at making sense of sports television and digital ratings is Austin Karp, the assistant managing editor of...

President Trump has lambasted the NFL more than 20 times for players’ “Total Disrespect of Our Great Country.” Ratings are down for NFL games and Trump figures it’s because some players aren’t standing, hand over heart, and mouthing the words to the national anthem. Trump may have made some political hay out of all this, but one only has to follow the money to learn the real reason pro football ratings are down — competition from college football. The fact is, “Their product isn’t very good these days,” Nick Bogdanovich told the Las Vegas Sun. He is the chief oddsmaker...

The University of Tennessee's circuitous head-coaching search, which has taken on just about every twist imaginable, is nearing an end, as the Volunteers are finalizing a deal with Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, sources told ESPN. Tennessee expects to announce Pruitt as its football coach on Thursday, and a press conference to introduce him is planned for later in the day. Sources told ESPN that Pruitt plans to stay on as Alabama's defensive coordinator through the College Football Playoff, while pulling double duty as the Vols' head coach and spearheading their recruiting efforts and putting together his staff at Tennessee.

Georgia 28, Auburn 7, final. A total reversal of Round 1. Auburn again missed scoring chances, but they wouldn’t have even mattered. With a 240-yard rushing day against Auburn and an efficient day by Jake Fromm, Georgia again looks like the most complete team in the country, if not necessarily the best. At the moment, I’m projecting UGA to meet Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl. The last two Power 5 title games matter here, though.

A decade ago, the 2007 college football season set the volatility benchmark for this generation. The season unfolded with a relentless flurry of upsets, surprise contenders and more visceral plot twists than a Dennis Lehane novel. Consider that two-loss LSU ended up the national champion, Missouri was ranked No. 1 and the No. 2 ranking was held by California, Boston College, South Florida, Kansas and West Virginia at different times during the year.
