SNIP The situation unfolded when Christina sent her boss a text message after finding out she was the “lowest paid in the whole team” despite having worked at the company the longest and being in one of the most senior roles. The staff member said it didn’t matter who told her and asked if it was true. “It absolutely does matter. This is not an appropriate topic of discussion for the workplace,” Elliot responded. Askins slammed this response, telling his followers that it is completely legal to discuss pay with your colleagues and to “never let a company tell you...

Some Apple Vision Pro users are finding that the virtual-reality headset isn’t so easy on the eyes, after all. Emily Olman got her $3,500 device in February and told MarketWatch that it gave her two black eyes after she wore it for the first time for about an hour. “I wasn’t able to use it very much the first few weeks because the fit was just off,” said Olman, chief media officer at Hopscotch Interactive, who is based in Kensington, Calif. Olman creates videos with the device for commercial and residential real-estate clients. She added that she had “like, superdark...
  • Scientists Create Levitating Graphite Plate For Ultra-Sensitive Quantum Sensors

(Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology) Levitation is the kind of superpower many researchers would love to get their hands on. While there are a number of ways to fight the forces of gravity, few are suitable for the kinds of ultrasensitive devices that would benefit from floating untethered in a vacuum. Led by a team from the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) in Japan, a team of researchers have found a way to shield thin wafers of graphite as they hover freely above a grid of magnets, making them far less susceptible to currents that interfere with...

“Well, a testicular eclipse is probably not something you had on your bingo card, but here we are. As you likely know by now, Monday was the big day for the Solar eclipse, and many states in the US were in the path of the “total eclipse,” as were other countries around the world. In fact, folks near Torreón, Mexico, got to experience “totality” for one of the longest periods of time, lasting 4 minutes and 28 seconds, according to NASA. Wikipedia explains that the solar eclipse of April 8, 2024, was a total solar eclipse visible within a band...
  • Data Delivery Rates 4.5 MILLION TIMES FASTER Than Average Broadband Achieved In Major Fiber Optic Breakthrough

The fastest data delivery rate ever achieved using specific wavelength bands in fiber optic technology has been reported by an international team of researchers, who say they sent information 4.5 million times faster than the average home broadband will allow. According to researchers at Aston University in Birmingham, England, who participated in the experiment, a series of new technologies they developed allowed them to successfully transfer data at an astonishing rate of 301 terabits (301,000,000 megabits) per second. Remarkably, the Aston team says the breakthrough that achieved these impressive data transfer rates used only standard optical fiber. The team says...
  • NYC’s AI chatbot was caught telling businesses to break the law. The city isn’t taking it down

An artificial intelligence-powered chatbot created by New York City to help small business owners is under criticism for dispensing bizarre advice that misstates local policies and advises companies to violate the law. In responses to questions posed Wednesday, the chatbot falsely suggested it is legal for an employer to fire a worker who complains about sexual harassment, doesn’t disclose a pregnancy or refuses to cut their dreadlocks. Contradicting two of the city’s signature waste initiatives, it claimed that businesses can put their trash in black garbage bags and are not required to compost. At times, the bot’s answers veered into...

Trump Media & Technology Group Corp. stock (DJT) fell sharply Friday. Donald Trump has said he’ll prioritize the company’s Truth Social site despite doubts over its future as a social-media platform. Trump Media shares were down 9.7% at $41.68 in trading Friday. The stock closed down 5.5% at $46.15 on Thursday. One doubt about the company has been whether Trump will continue to promote the Truth Social platform. While an agreement between him and the company requires him to make any of his personal social-media posts on Truth Social first and wait six hours before posting to Meta Platforms' Facebook,...

I'm running Kubuntu 22.04. I've been annoyed for some time that Thunderbird removed support for Movemail a while back. I have searched for ways around it, to no avail. I'd like to be able to read my local system mail using something more then just the command-line mail program. Does anyone have a good recommendation for an email program that will move mail from /var/spool/mail/ This is strictly local mail. I do not intend to send mail at all from this
  • AI looks to cut workforces across sectors, companies should train in-house: survey

Artificial intelligence will lead to fewer employees at companies in most sectors, according to an exhaustive survey of executives by the Swiss staffing company The Adecco Group (OTCPK:AHEXY). The survey found 41% of companies expect fewer people employed at their organization in five years due to AI and generative AI. What's more, only 46% of employers plan to redeploy workers internally if their jobs are displaced by AI. The survey, "Leading through the great disruption 2024," involved 2,000 C-suite executives spanning nine countries. It was conducted in collaboration with Oxford Economics. The study's authors suggest companies should take a "human-centric...

If you plan to deposit $10,000 or more into your checking account, there are a few things you should consider first. By law, banks have to report deposits that exceed a certain amount. Not only that, but many bank accounts come with maximum deposit restrictions. You may also be subject to certain fees when making such a large deposit. If you frequently make large deposits, you should also watch out for any potential scams or fraudulent activity. But even if this is a one-time thing, it’s still important to know about these factors and how they might affect you. Banks...

What just happened? It's not just China that is replacing Windows on government PCs. Germany's most northern state, Schleswig-Holstein, has begun moving from the popular OS to Linux while also switching from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice. The state's Minister-President Daniel Gunther said the move from proprietary to open-source software was being made to ensure independence, sustainability, and security. "In addition to improved IT security, cost-effectiveness, and data protection, the use of open-source software also enables seamless collaboration between different systems," officials said. "Alongside open-source software development, the goal is to release future development results of the country under free licenses."The...

Why it matters: Ultra-high-purity quartz is an essential component to semiconductor chips, and the only places in the world that can meet this need are two mines in a small North Carolina town. The mines' owner, Sibelco, is investing $700 million to expand capacity, but is that enough to keep up with AI-fueled chip demand? Spruce Pine is a small town about two hours drive northwest of Charlotte, NC. You can get to the general area via a number of ways, depending on your point of origin, but for the last stretch of the trip, you need to travel down...

A team of scientists from the University of Tokyo has revealed a major breakthrough that allows them to create realistic 3D holographic displays using an ordinary iPhone screen. While conventional approaches to holography involve complex and expensive laser emitters that have limited their practical use, the researchers behind this novel approach say their work could lead to dramatic improvements in holographic displays for virtual reality applications, including gaming, training, and even advanced military applications. 3D HOLOGRAPHIC DISPLAYS LIMITED BY COST AND COMPLEXITY In science fiction, holograms are used for anything from basic communications to advanced military weaponry. In the real...

Has anyone else noticed that Youtube is at it again, trying to block users who use an adblocker? The past several days have been hit and miss. About the only way I've been able to get around it is one of two ways: 1. to save videos to Watch Later, close the browser, then reopen the browser to view them, or 2. delete all cookies and cache and then log back in. But either of these two fixes are temporary because it happens almost every day now. Has anyone seen this, and have a newer fix for this? Thanks.

Researchers report the development of a new concept for a new DC power converter capable of greater efficiency at lower cost and requiring less maintenance than existing electrical systems. Developed by a team at Kobe University in Hyōgo, Japan, the direct current voltage boost converter could revolutionize the development and use of electric power generation in various applications. Boost converters, which are also known as step-up converters, are a variety of switched -mode power supply devices that increase voltage while also reducing current in the conversion of direct current (DC) from the device’s input to its output. Most power converters...
