Washington - The White House says the Obama administration has had no contact with the Muslim Brotherhood, the deeply conservative Islamic organization that constitutes the biggest organized opposition group in Egypt. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters Monday that before dealing with opposition groups the administration would want assurances that they adhere to the law, that they are non-violent and that they are willing to be part of a democratic process. Gibbs said there would be no contact with the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt unless those assurances were offered.

On page A3 of today’s Washington Post: Another liberal movement leader, Daily Kos blog founder Markos Moulitsas, said he “long ago” cut off contact with the White House. “It’s clear that they want to double down on their capitulation strategy,” he said in an e-mail. Those words are written in English, but I cannot seem to get them to make sense in that order. The staff of the leader of the free world, with the world’s most powerful bully pulpit, in service of a president whose persuasive and oratorical abilities are endlessly touted, find themselves needing the assistance of the...

Conservatives despise him. Many liberals remain stubbornly unimpressed. Now, even babies — sweet, lovable, barely sentient babies — have turned on President Obama, the man with whom they once invested so much hope. Though he tries time and again to connect with these impressionable young citizens, it is all in vain, for his overtures are met only with cold shoulders. Tiny, cold shoulders.

• Khaled Meshal says US 'not brave enough to do so openly' • Hamas leader praises Russian president for meeting him The United States is sending a succession of envoys to engage with Hamas but lacks the bravery to talk to the Islamist movement openly, its leader, Khaled Meshal, said in an interview with the Guardian. Meshal praised President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia for meeting him in Damascus and the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, for hosting the discussion 10 days ago. He told Medvedev that the US was also talking to him. "I thanked him for that meeting and told...

Once available, I took a few minutes to read the illegal immigration legislation provided by the Arizona legislature. I certainly knew what lawful contact meant, but some thought it vague enough to result in random ID checks. Now, the Arizona state legislature has clarified what they meant by lawful contact. They did not have to do that. Do they honestly think this will result in approval?

For anyone inclined to write e-mails to Republican senators, here's a list of all of them, the state they represent, and a link to their contact page. Unfortunately, there are no direct e-mail addresses, which would make doing mass e-mails a lot quicker. Instead, you have to use their web forms. But, once you type your template letter, you can copy and paste it. You'll still need to type in your contact info, but this is the most stream lined (and least expensive) way I know of to send something in writing en masse. (If anyone has any better ideas,...

A herd of pigs in Canada has tested positive for swine flu, after coming into contact with a human carrier. The pigs were apparently infected by an Alberta farm worker who had recently returned from Mexico. The herd, in the western province of Alberta, has been quarantined. Many new cases of swine flu have been diagnosed among humans in Canada, where the total number of sufferers has risen from 35 to 85.

Should Gwen Ifill recuse herself from the VP debate given that her Obama book is coming out Jan. 20, 2009? For those who think she ought to, they might make their feelings known to PBS CEO Paula Kerger. Her phone is 703-739-8619. They might also wish to address their concerns with Sharon Rockefeller, CEO of WETA/Washington from where Ifill broadcasts and does her show. Ms. Rockefeller’s phone is 703-998-2089.

I hope I am posting this correctly, I've never done one of these before, but it's really important. Please PLEASE contact your representative and senator NOW about the bill that they are working on. I know that if they have to pass this sort of legislation, I do NOT want any of that money to go to anything like ACORN etc. I know we all feel that we don't have much of a voice, but if we ALL contact our own reps, we may find that they will listen. If we don't do it, they certainly won't hear us. It's...

Bird flu may be spread indirectly, WHO says By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor Thu Jan 17, 8:22 AM ET The H5N1 bird flu virus may sometimes stick to surfaces or get kicked up in fertilizer dust to infect people, according to a World Health Organization report published on Wednesday. The WHO team reviewed all known human cases of avian influenza, which has infected 350 people in 14 countries and killed 217 of them since 2003, and found that 25 percent of cases have no explanation. Most are passed directly from bird to people, they noted in their report,...

January 22, 2008 It’s not often in this era of rampant technological innovation that a fundamentally new concept surfaces – with almost no limitations to what can be achieved with the myriad new technologies coming to market over the last few years, fundamentally new ideas of this magnitude are becoming increasingly rare, much less technologies with groundbreaking societal implications. Such a technology emerged this week when it was announced that engineers at the University of Washington have used microscopic scale manufacturing techniques to combine a flexible contact lens with an imprinted electronic circuit and lights. Though in its infancy, the...

WASHINGTON, Sept. 26, 2007 – Audiences from fire bases in Afghanistan to five-star hotels find themselves in the same situation when they hear Marine Gen. Peter Pace speak. Listeners get so caught up in what the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is saying that they barely move. I’ve had the privilege of traveling the world with the chairman over the past two years. I’ve seen him with heads of state and new recruits, and he treats each with the same respect and consideration. The general is probably most comfortable talking with troops. Every time he travels, he...

Burlington, Vermont has added the world’s primary outlet of slickly-produced jihad propaganda, Al Jazeera, to their city-owned cable television channel. The Boston Globe buried their report here. A cable company is offering the Al-Jazeera network in its cable package, one of only a few in the nation to do so. Burlington Telecom, a city-owned cable company that serves 1,200 households in Vermont’s largest city, began offering the Arab-operated network about six months ago. “We were certainly squeamish about it at first, given its reputation in the United States,” said Tim Nulty, director of Burlington Telecom. “But if you look at...

Graves hint at contact with Romans Published: 8th November 2006 19:18 CET Archaeologists excavating ancient graves in western Sweden have found shards from ceramic vessels made in the Roman Empire, in a find that could challenge assumptions about contacts between people in Sweden and the Romans. The graves in Stenungsund, around 45 kilometres north of Gothenburg, have been dated to between the years 1 and 300 AD. The remains of burned bones from two people were found, along with the pieces of ceramic. "There are pieces from four or five vessels in each grave, and we have never previously found...

Former President Clinton bemoaned ideologues who describe opponents as "running for office on his or her way to hell" and urged Democrats not to shy from fighting back. Clinton, criticizing Republicans weeks before the midterm elections, told an audience at Georgetown University on Wednesday that intellectual debate should trump partisan rancor and either-or choices are false. "Most of us long for politics where we have genuine arguments, vigorous disagreements but we don't claim to have the whole truth and we don't demonize our opponents and we work for what's best for the American people," he said. Clinton, whose wife Sen....

Tuesday, May 9 at 8/7c To date, there have been no cases of the H5N1 virus in the United States nor has there been a human transmission of the disease in a form that could fuel a pandemic. In the post-Civil War era, inspired by Abraham Lincoln and Union victory, those blacks who could overcome state requirements aimed at preventing their voting usually voted Republican. President Dwight D. Eisenhower overwhelmingly was supported by blacks when he ran for re-election in 1956. Then came Senator John F. Kennedy, D-Mass., in the 1960 presidential race. Blacks switched and voted for JFK. They helped him win that squeaker election against Vice President Richard M. Nixon. What happened? At the time I had just begun my broadcasting career and was working at WLIP in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Working alongside me on weekends was...

The company paints ships at Naval Station San Diego. Most of its employees have security badges to enter the base that is home to more than 50 ships. But one of the buyers,...

Almost 50 percent of Americans, according to recent polls, and millions of people elsewhere in the world believe that UFOs are real. For many it is a deeply held belief. For decades there have been sightings of UFOs by millions and millions of people. It is a mystery that only science can solve, and yet the phenomenon remains largely unexamined. Most of the reporting on this subject by the mainstream media holds those who claim to have seen UFOs up to ridicule. On Feb. 24, "Peter Jennings Reporting: UFOs — Seeing Is Believing" takes a fresh look at the UFO...

WHY would a serious journalist like Peter Jennings tackle a silly subject like UFOs? Maybe it's because 40 million Americans can't be wrong. It turns out that 40 million of us have claimed to have seen UFOs, while half — yes, half — of all Americans believe in their existence… < snip > So, why, if millions of people have seen UFOs, are the eyewitnesses immediately reduced to the level of raving loonies (from "lunar")? Interestingly enough, that is the legacy of another successful government PR campaign…< snip > The feds thought they could keep a lid on UFO sightings...

The strange decline in relations between the US military and its one-time Iraqi ally, Ahmad Chalabi, took a new twist yesterday when Iran admitted having had regular dialogue with the former Pentagon favourite. The authorities in Tehran - and Mr Chalabi - were quick to deny suggestions that he had handed US secrets to Iran. But an Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, Hamid Reza Asefi, told reporters that Tehran had maintained "continuous and permanent dialogue with Chalabi and other members of the Iraqi governing council". He added that spying charges were "unfounded and baseless". Mr Chalabi, the leader of the Iraqi...

Thursday, February 12, 2004 Statement Regarding the President’s Responsible Highway and Transit Budget The President has charted a course for cutting the budget deficit in half in five years. We must fund our priorities of winning the war on terror, defending the homeland, and creating jobs -- and we must hold the line on spending in other areas. The President's budget proposes a responsible $256 billion in highway and transit spending, which represents a 21 percent increase over the previous six-year period and a responsible approach to improve highway safety and curb congestion. The President also has made clear that...
