A Michigan couple is furious after police shot and killed their 10-month-old lab-pit bull puppy in their own backyard. Bianca Alakson and Ryan Showalter said their dog, Rock, was in their backyard Sunday morning when police began chasing a suspect through their Redford Township neighborhood, WDIV-TV reported. Police said they saw their suspect in the couple's home. When officers went through the gate into the backyard to find the suspect, Rock charged, one officer said. The officer fired one round, but when that didn't stop the dog, he fired a second, fatal shot.

Briefly, here's the story from the owner's neighbor. A Walton County Sheriff's deputy shot my friends dog last night while the dog was in his own yard. The officer said he shot him because "he had that look". This was one of the sweetest dogs ever...a big clumsy pup that would lick your face off. Yes he was a blue nose pit bull but he was a PUPPY who loves to play and chew stuff up! The dog actually belonged to Taylor, a 5 year old little girl...now COMPLETELY broken hearted, not to mention confused because a policeman, someone she...

The City of Leander, Texas, has announced that it will not pay the veterinary bill for a dog who was shot by a Leander Police officer after the police came onto the property of James and Renata Simmons on June 17. When the officers entered, the Simmons’ German Shepherd, Vinny, came running around the side of the house and was shot by one of the officers who felt the dog was a threat to their safety. It turned out that the officers were trying to execute a warrant at the wrong address in Liberty Hill. Vinny needed extensive veterinary...

GALVESTON — Police officers captured one Rottweiler and shot and killed another after repeated shocks from a stun gun proved ineffective, authorities said Thursday. Police received a call early Wednesday about the roaming dogs and went to an alley in the 3900 block of Avenue N1/2 at 8:23 a.m. to investigate. The dogs, including one that weighed 100 pounds, had bitten two people recently, Galveston police Lt. Michael Gray said. When the animal control officer arrived, the dogs wouldn’t allow him to safely get out of the truck, so the officer shocked one with a Taser and grabbed it with...

Epifania Avalos said Natalia police showed up Feb. 1 prepared to seize her animals, but something went horribly wrong. “I told them not to do it,” Avalos said. “Please don’t do it. I was crying and I’m still missing my animals and they said ‘no, we have to get rid of them.’” Residents in Natalia are only allowed to have four pets, Avalos admits to having 15 animals, but said her animals did not have to die.

Police departments are perennially accused of excessive force--the poignant SPD shooting of Native American carver John Williams being just the latest example. Usually, however, the victims are human beings. Not so in an excessive-force case recently filed in federal court, which details the fatal shooting of a Labrador retriever mixed-breed dog named Slyder, allegedly for doing little more than sniffing the butt of a police dog.

The Labriola family dog, Spuddy, was something of a legend on his Blue Island block, where neighbors stopped to give the 15-year-old mutt a friendly pat on the head or toss him a treat. One of those neighbors this summer tried to explain to a police officer that the old dog wasn't a stray but belonged to the Labriolas, on the 12200 block of Maple Avenue. By the end of that June day, however, Spuddy had been shot four times in the head by another officer who believed the animal was near death. His remains were thrown into a garbage...

A Miami-Dade judge has decided to drop the felony charge facing a former cop who is on trial for killing his K-9 companion. Allen Cockfield faced prison time if convicted of killing a police dog, which is a third degree felony. Cockfield, a 25-year veteran of the Miami-Dade police force, is accused of choking and then kicking Duke the K-9 repeatedly during an obedience training session in 2006. The two had been partners for six months before the incident happened. The judge ruled Cockfield didn't intend to kill Duke, despite his violent actions. The former cop still faces animal cruelty...
