On Thursday night when Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden angrily accused President Trump of a “criminal” family separation policy that had “lost track” of more than 500 migrant children at the U.S.-Mexico border, he was repeating an inaccurate and misleading news report that had circulated earlier this week. “What happened? Their kids were ripped from their arms and separated and now they cannot find over 500 sets of those parents and those kids are alone,” Biden said. “Nowhere to go, nowhere to go. It’s criminal.”

The government hasn’t “lost track” of migrant children's parents. The fact is, some parents don’t want their children back in their country of origin. While families' cats and dogs are enjoying the upside of spending days with their owners working from home during the coronavirus shutdown, wild coyotes in San Francisco are reportedly also taking advantage of the benefits of a suddenly empty city. There have been several recent fake stories circulating about unusual wildlife showing up in cities during the global pandemic, including news from Italy of dolphins swimming in the historic canals of Venice and a gang of happy drunk elephants in the Yunnan province of China that was also debunked. A surge in coyotes wandering the streets of San Francisco is...

Surrounded by three coyotes in the backyard of his family's Highland Park home Monday night, a brave cat named Max held his own and tried to fight them off all by himself -- and the tense standoff was captured on video. Maya Gurrin and her husband were watching a movie in their home on Crestwood Way when they noticed a shadow of a tail through the window. The went outside to check it out and were stunned to find a group of coyotes in their yard. “I just kind of scream and lunge at them, and then they run away,...
  • (Vanity) Coyote cost to be smuggled

I have a question for FReepers which might merit some discussion. I've been reading about the amount that people pay coyotes to be smuggled into the US. For Central Americans and other OTM (Other than Mexicans), estimates I've seen vary from $6,000 to $12,000 per person. That amount gets a person smuggled through Mexico (really, the Mexican part is a bribe for passage, possibly un-molested) and across the border into the US. An example article discussing this can be easily found. One example is this one from the NY Times: What it Costs to be Smuggled Across the U. S....

Probably not the scenario to be in for a hiker, but what if you’re on a hike. And, you get this feeling that something is near you, not by another human but by a pack of howling coyotes. When we hear coyotes howling its usually from a safe distance. How would you handle a pack of coyotes howling closer to you? Most of the time when I’m on a hike, I carry a pistol and depending on the state that allows me to carry my rifle. (AR) In this video a hiker is unarmed on a hiking trail with coyotes...
  • Coyote Attacks 3-Year-Old on Front Porch of Washington Home

Families in a Washington state community have noticed an uptick in coyote sightings lately. Within a 24-hour span, the city of Snoqualmie received seven reports of coyotes in the area—including an attack on a 3-year-old girl while she was on her porch, according to KCPQ. Douglas Lucas says his daughter was attacked by a coyote who came up to the front porch of their home and pounced on the child on Thursday. “It bite me,” said 3-year-old Sophia about her encounter with a coyote. The little girl was outside with her father on the front porch of their home. Lucas was up on...

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has arrested more than 400 people in an operation targeting undocumented parents and guardians who allegedly paid smugglers to bring their children to the U.S., putting them in grave danger. An ICE spokesman tells NPR the domestic phase of its Human Smuggling Disruption Initiative concluded on Friday. He said the "surge initiative" will now shift its focus to the transnational smuggling organizations that bring the children to the U.S.-Mexico border. The operation, which uses immigrant children to target their sponsors in the U.S., has been controversial. Immigrant advocates complain it is hampering efforts to reunite families....

SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - A "cyanide bomb" planted by U.S. predator-control agents targeting coyotes near homes and hiking trails in Idaho exploded when a boy handled the device, injuring him and killing his dog, authorities and relatives said on Friday. Canyon Mansfield, 14, was playing with his yellow Labrador retriever, Casey, on Thursday afternoon near his home east of Pocatello when he saw what he thought was a sprinkler head on the ground and touched the device, causing it to detonate. The explosion sprayed the boy and his 3-year-old, 90-pound (40 kg) pet with toxic cyanide gas, according to the...

Donkeys hate coyotes, so much so that they sometimes go postal on intruding 'yotes like this donkey did. South Carolina landowner Steve Hipps has a grass pasture in his backyard that's guarded by a donkey named Buck. Buck used to share the pasture with a female donkey, but when she had babies, Hipps decided to let Buck have it all to himself. "I just wanted something in there to keep the grass eaten down, and I've always loved donkeys," Hipps told Georgia Outdoor News. But Hipps got more than a grass muncher; he got a coyote killing machine. Read the...

Their $400 in the cabbie’s pocket, he dropped off Seidu Mohammed and Razak Iyal a two-minute drive short of the North Dakota-Manitoba line. The driver pointed the men toward a darkened prairie field and a row of red blinking lights, wind turbines in the distance. Walk toward those lights, and they could grasp freedom. “We didn’t feel any sign, but we could feel we are in Canada, because of...

When coyotes pack up, big game is no match for these killers. Witness this stunning game camera footage of a whole pack of coyotes on the hunt. Seeing fewer deer this season? Well a coyote pack this size or larger just may be devouring your game. A single coyote is a formidable predator. Now, combine multiple coyotes, and their killing power increases to large game with no issues. At least eight coyotes by our count make their way down this trail in search of prey. Now, that is a team of killers with a swagger. See the video here.

The Coyote Principle California The Governor of California is jogging with his dog along a nature trail. A coyote jumps out and attacks the Governor's dog, then bites the Governor. The Governor starts to intervene, but reflects upon the movie "Bambi" and then realizes he should stop because the coyote is only doing what is natural. He calls animal control. Animal Control captures the coyote and bills the state $200 testing it for diseases and $500 for relocating it. He calls a veterinarian. The vet collects the dead dog and bills the State $200 testing it for diseases. The Governor...

Coyotes will hurt our Deer Hunting With the rise of coyote population, Quality Deer Managment Association data shows that 75 percent of the coyote population needs to be removed annually to control their population. But the reality is that hunting coyotes isn’t going to make a dent in decreasing their population due too many coyotes out there. Some hunters and land owners have talked of trapping, localized areas have had some successes. Trapping is still hard due to resource, man power and gasoline. Someone has to get out there and check the traps in the areas. Despite the efforts our...

A Milton man chased down a coyote to help save his family’s dog from a potentially deadly attack. Early Saturday morning, the small dog named Cally was outside in her backyard when a coyote attacked her and opened gaping wounds. The coyote then ran away with Cally still in its mouth. Ryan Labbe says his father then chased down the coyote and saved his pet’s life. “It attacked her first in the abdomen,” Ryan said. “But she managed to get away somehow. Then it attacked her again and went right for her neck, picked her up and ran down the...

It is rare for a new animal species to emerge in front of scientists’ eyes. But this seems to be happening in eastern North America. ___ Like some people who might rather not admit it, wolves faced with a scarcity of potential sexual partners are not beneath lowering their standards. It was desperation of this sort, biologists reckon, that led dwindling wolf populations in southern Ontario to begin, a century or two ago, breeding widely with dogs and coyotes. The clearance of forests for farming, together with the deliberate persecution which wolves often suffer at the hand of man, had...
