ABSTRACT: Jesus of Nazareth underwent Jewish and Roman trials, was flogged, and was sentenced to death by crucifixion. The scourging produced deep stripelike lacerations and appreciable blood loss, and it probably set the stage for hypovolemic shock as evidenced by the fact that Jesus was too weakened to carry the crossbar (patibulum) to Golgotha. At the site of crucifixion his wrists were nailed to the patibulum, and after the patibulum was lifted onto the upright post, (stipes) his feet were nailed to the stipes. The major pathophysiologic effect of crucifixion was an interference with normal respirations. Accordingly, death resulted primarily...

28After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.” 29A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. 30Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. John 19:28-30 May God bless the reading of His Word.

WARNING: MATERIAL IN THIS ARTICLE MAY BE UNSUITABLE FOR YOUNGER CHILDREN. PARENTAL DISCRETION IS ADVISED. About a decade ago, reading Jim Bishop’s The Day Christ Died, I realized that I had for years taken the Crucifixion more or less for granted — that I had grown callous to its horror by a too easy familiarity with the grim details and a too distant friendship with our Lord. It finally occurred to me that, though a physician, I didn’t even know the actual immediate cause of death. The Gospel writers don’t help us much on this point, because crucifixion and scourging...

Dear friend, maybe you were raised to believe - as I was - that Jesus (our Lamb and Savior) was crucified on Good Friday. If one does the math... Friday can never work (see charts below). The "Sign of the prophet Jonah" states it all; The ONLY sign that the Lord would give to the Messiah rejecting leadership of Israel and nation was the sign of the most rejected event and individual of the Bible, Jonah and the whale (Jonah 1:17). "Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee....
  • How Jesus Died: Rare Evidence of Roman Crucifixion Found

The body of a man buried in northern Italy 2,000 years ago shows signs that he died after being nailed to a wooden cross, the method used for the execution of Jesus described in the Christian Bible. Although crucifixion was a common form of capital punishment for criminals and slaves in ancient Roman times, the new finding is only the second time that direct archaeological evidence of it has been found. A new study of the skeletal remains of the man, found near Venice in 2007, reveals a lesion and unhealed fracture on one of the heel bones that suggests...

A 14' by 4' piece of linen in northern Italy genuinely appears (after exhaustive scientific testing), to contain a picture of the crucified Christ. The Shroud of Turin. But what about the Shroud of Oviedo? Their combined picture gives new significance to that old song 'nothing but the blood'. The linen cloth housed in Oviedo, called The Sudarium, meaning "sweat cloth", measures 33" by 21" inches. It contains no image of its own, only stains. The Scriptures describe both a shroud and a smaller cloth at the tomb: "And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying...

Franciscan University posted a series of ads on Facebook Friday to promote some of its online theology programs, but it says one of them was rejected because it included the Crucifixion of Christ on the San Damiano Cross. The Catholic university in Steubenville, Ohio sent out a tweet on Friday saying its ad was rejected for content that is "shocking, sensational, and excessively violent." "An ad we placed was rejected by Facebook today for content that is "shocking, sensational, and excessively violent," said the tweet, which included a link to a blog post."We must agree with them."

For the hundreds of millions of Christians who observe Holy Week, the Friday before Easter is a time of solemn reflection on the crucifixion of Jesus. Known as "Good Friday," the day is often marked by special worship services and re-enactments of the last hours of Jesus, from being condemned by Pilate to being buried in a rock tomb. Over the centuries, many songs and hymns have been written with a focus on the crucifixion. Here, in no particular order, are seven thought-provoking music pieces that focus on the cross. 1. O Sacred Head Now Wounded The exact origins of...

  • The Victor;Psalm 22 pt 2...Messianic Psalms 7

I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. Ye that fear the Lord, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.(Psalm 22:22-23)We are suddenly transported into an entirely different scenario. The righteous servant had just been hanging between heaven and earth, or perhaps even heaven and Hell. His enemies have been jeering, exulting over and mocking Him. He has called out to the LORD on whom He has long relied to save His soul from the savages who encompass...

Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. (Psalm 40:7-8)We have been seeing the Messiah revealed in the fortieth Psalm. The incredible conversation between the eternal Father and the eternal Son has been revealed by the Spirit to the psalmist. This is not the only time this has been revealed in the Psalms. Psalm 2 has the Father and the Son discussing the Divine Kingship over the nations. Psalm 110 has the LORD saying unto...

Much of the scholarly discussion about the circumstances of JesusÂ’ death relates to the question of who was responsible for his arrest and crucifixion.Who was responsible? The Jews or the Romans?Historically, the primary responsibility has been placed on the Jewish leadership and the Jews in Jerusalem. Throughout the centuries, this has sometimes had tragic consequences, resulting in anti-Semitism and violence against Jews.More recent trends in scholarship have shifted the blame to the Romans. The tendency to blame the Jews, it is said, arose in the decades after the crucifixion with the churchÂ’s growing conflict with the synagogue and its desire to...

[Full Title: Time of death Accounts of the Crucifixion seem to vary, but they do not clash with how the ancient world marked time] Question: How long did Jesus hang on the cross? ... Answer: Your question arises from an apparent difference between two biblical texts. Mark 15:25 says Jesus was crucified at the third hour (9 a.m.). However, in John 19:14 the crucifixion is set at the sixth hour (noon). Both Matthew 27:45 and Luke 23:44 hint at a time frame closer to noon in their reference to a darkness coming over the land from noon to 3 p.m....

The Seven Words Spoken by Jesus Christ on the Cross by St. Alphonsus Liguori Taken from THE PASSION AND DEATH OF JESUS CHRIST, Redemptorist Fathers, 1927 with Nihil Obstat and ImprimaturFIRST WORD"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." [Luke 23: 34] O loving tenderness of Jesus towards men! Saint Augustine says that when the Savior was injured by His enemies, He besought pardon for them; for He thought not so much of the injuries He received from them, and the death they inflicted upon Him, as upon the love which brought Him to die for them....

Four Immediate Effects of the Passion Msgr. Charles Pope • April 12, 2017 • Let’s continue our consideration of the Passion with a text describing the aftermath of Jesus’ crucifixion. The Gospel of Matthew recounts four immediate results of Jesus’ death, and while they describe historical events, they also signal deeper spiritual truths. And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split, and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many...
  • He was Despised...Servant Songs pt 12

Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.(Isaiah 53:1-3)It is the climax of human history, the apocalypse, the very...

Image of how the Sabana Santa was placed on the body of Jesus (MURCIA, Spain) – A new scientific study conducted by researchers at the Catholic University of Murcia in Spain has confirmed that the Shroud of Turin and the Shroud of Oviedo were wrapped around the same person, following up on previously unpublished medical and forensic research. Furthermore, the study has identified a spear wound made in the corpse, which according to the study’s authors “agrees with what is reflected in the Gospel of Saint John.” The study, led by forensic medical researcher Dr. Alfonso Sánchez Hermosilla, took up...

A Florida college student was suspended after he challenged a Muslim professor who claimed that Jesus’ crucifixion at Calvary was a hoax. Marshall Polston, 20, was suspended March 24 by Rollins College in Winter Park after an argument with his Middle Eastern Humanities professor over the historical validity of Jesus’ death, a failing grade, and a Muslim’s student’s allegedly violent rhetoric during a discussion on Sharia Law. The professor, Areej Zufari, claimed he was harassed, although video surveillance obtained by a local paper suggests otherwise.

A student from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida claims he was suspended for challenging his Muslim professor’s anti-Christian assertions, including her assertion that Jesus’ crucifixion never occurred. Marshall Polston, 20, is claiming that his Middle Eastern Humanities professor also told students that Jesus’ disciples “did not believe he was God.” Polston, a self-described Christian who has toured the Middle East, says he is familiar with the Muslim culture. “Honestly, it reminded me of some of the more radical groups I researched when abroad,” Polston told the Central Florida Post when asked about his professor’s comments. “Whether religious or not,...
