PHOENIX – A judge has blocked the most controversial sections of Arizona's new immigration law from taking effect Thursday, handing a major legal victory to opponents of the crackdown. The law will still take effect Thursday, but without many of the provisions that angered opponents — including sections that required officers to check a person's immigration status while enforcing other laws.

Arizona's not alone. Five states have introduced similar immigration laws since The Grand Canyon State passed controversial legislation that is scheduled to kick in on July 29, according the Los Angeles Times. The number of immigration-based laws and resolutions supported by states has increased by more than 10 times in recent years. "Lawmakers are frustrated with federal inaction," Ann Morse, a program director with the National Conference of State Legislatures told the newspaper. "Until the federal government acts, states will still see this as an area where they see the need to play a leadership role." The group says officials...

DETROIT — States have the authority to enforce immigration laws and protect their borders, Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox said Wednesday in a legal brief on behalf of nine states supporting Arizona's immigration law. Cox, one of five Republicans running for Michigan governor, said Michigan is the lead state backing Arizona in federal court and is joined by Alabama, Florida, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas and Virginia, as well as the Northern Mariana Islands.

She says a lot of specific stuff here and it is clear to me that she intends To finish the fence, the physical barrier, a double fence from Brownsville to San Diego. That she will put...

Not since President Eisenhower sent troops to Little Rock and JFK sent U.S. marshals to the University of Alabama has the federal government seemed so at war with a state of the union. Arkansas and Alabama were defying U.S. court orders to desegregate. But Barack Obama's war on Arizona is not a war of necessity. It is a war of choice -- an unprovoked war, undertaken not to defend constitutional or civil rights, but to pander to his party's left and Hispanic voters. New Mexico's Gov. Bill Richardson, himself Hispanic, gave the game away. At the Boston governors conference, he...

After watching Sarah on O'Reilly last night and hearing her speak to the immigration issue, I am satisfied that she would put in place the strongest plan of all the strongest candidates to enforce our border and establish an environment here in the nation where many, if not most illegals here would either self-deport, or be caught and sent home. She needs, post haste, to develop these talking points into a comprehensive immigrataion plan that speaks to the issues in no uncertain terms. Here's a start for securing the border: A Comprehensive Plan for US Souhern Border Enforcement As...

A new poll shows that 61% of Coloradans want a copy of Arizona’s law allowing law enforcement to investigate those they encounter who exhibit reasonable suspicion of being an illegal alien. A recent study by the Federation for American Immigration Reform discovered that illegal aliens cost Colorado taxpayers more than $1.1 billion per year, or about $612 per household. Additionally, between $730 million and $1 billion per year of wages paid to illegal aliens is sent out of the country instead of being reinvested in local communities. More than 10% of the students in Colorado public schools are the children...

Deport Children of Illegals: Hunter By R. STICKNEY Apr 28, 2010 Representative Duncan Hunter wants to deport the U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants. Hunter, who spoke at a tea party gathering in Ramona Saturday, said he does not believe children born to illegal immigrant parents should get automatic U.S. citizenship. In a video posted Saturday on YouTube, Hunter appears to be taking questions from the crowd when he is asked if he would support the deportation of children born to illegal immigrants. “I would have to,” he said. “It’s a complex issue and it’s… you can look and say, ‘You’re...

Underscoring the importance of the Hispanic vote, the McCain campaign is going on the air with a new ad that makes a specific appeal to the rapidly growing demographic. In the one-minute television spot, entitled “God’s Children,” Mr. McCain refers to the military service of Hispanics in wars, past and present. He asks Americans to “remember that these are God’s children. They must come into our country legally, but they have enriched our culture and our nation as every generation of immigrants before them." The ad, which will appear in Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico, features scenes of the Vietnam...

I asked the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office for the indictment of Mahamu D. Kanneh, the accused immigrant child molester let off because of a lack of a translator. There were nine counts against him involving not one, but two girls–both relatives of Kanneh. I’ve blocked out their names. Here’s the six-page indictment: (Unfortunately, only pages 5 and 6 could be copied.) The prosecutor in the case of a Liberian native charged with repeatedly raping and molesting a 7-year-old girl said Monday that he is filing an appeal of a controversial judge’s ruling that dismissed all charges because an...

WASHINGTON -- It is called EEVS -- pronounced Eves -- and it could be one of the poison apples in the immigration-overhaul bill that the Senate begins debating today. The Employment Eligibility Verification System would require employers to review the work-and-identity documents of all 146 million U.S. workers within three years -- and then hold CEOs responsible for certifying that those workers are legally eligible to hold their jobs. "It's like throwing a huge net to catch a few minnows," says Randel Johnson, a vice president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. As the immigration bill moved to the Senate...

NEW CITY, N.Y. -- The laborer who raped and murdered a suburban housewife in her bedroom after being hired to clean a backyard deck was sentenced Monday to life in prison without chance of parole. The sentence was imposed after the victim's husband, Daniel Nagle, said Douglas Herrera Castellanos "beat, cut, raped, sodomized and strangled the greatest love of my life and the mother of my two children." The sentencing came on what would have been the 13th wedding anniversary for Nagle and his wife Mary. Nagle, looking at Herrera, told him, "I hope that you wake up every single...
