Dollar Tree announced early Wednesday morning during its fourth-quarter earnings results that it will be closing as many as 390 of its Family Dollar stores in 2019 and remodeling 200 locations to become Dollar Tree stores. This follows on from 85 store closings at the chain during the fourth quarter of 2018. It has been three years since Dollar Tree bought Family Dollar, and analysts say that so far, it's been a disappointing run. The discount chain, which has more than 8,000 stores in the United States, has pulled down its parent company's earnings over the past few years. In...

Macon Brock, a retailer who co-founded the Dollar Tree chain of discount stores that grew into a Fortune 500 company, has died. He was 75. News outlets report Brock died Saturday at his home in Virginia Beach. His wife said he died of complications from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease. Brock was born and raised in Norfolk. In 1986, he and two others opened five stores called “Only $1.00” after having success in the retail toy business. The Chesapeake-based company changed its name to Dollar Tree in 1993. Brock and his wife made donations to colleges across Virginia, and...

NEW YORK — Dollar Tree said Friday that it has agreed to sell 330 of its stores to the private equity firm Sycamore Partners in order to get regulatory approval for its $8.5 billion purchase of Family Dollar. The Chesapeake, Virginia-based company said earlier this month that it would sell the stores, but it had not disclosed the buyer. It didn’t say how much Sycamore Partners will pay for the stores, which bring in about $500 million in annual revenue. It also didn’t disclose which stores are being sold....

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- There is roughly a 50% chance that Dollar General (DG_) tries a competing bid for Family Dollar (FDO_) after the company agreed to an $8.5 billion merger with Dollar Tree (DLTR_) in late July, Bloomberg reported. If Dollar General does move forward on a flip of the coin bid for its primary competitor in discount retail, it will face three major hurdles. Carl Icahn, once Family Dollar's largest shareholder and a major advocate of a Dollar General takeover, sold most of his shares in the company last week. Icahn pared his Family Dollar stake from nearly...

More stores across the U.S. that offer deeply-discounted products are seeing their sales decline after years of growth amid America’s “Great Recession” — and one analyst said on Monday it’s another sign of even deeper downturn. While the demand at stores like the 99-Cent Store or Dollar Tree is still relatively high, the biggest chains in the nation have fallen short of Wall Street’s expectations for several months, a trend that may prove even more ominous for the economy at large. “I think what’s going on in those stores is that we are in a depression for 80 percent of...

DALLAS — Next weekend, when you see the red, white and blue proudly displayed for Independence Day, take a closer look. President Eisenhower set the standard for all American flags 51 years ago. The order requires 13 stripes and 50 stars on a field of blue. Tim Childress had to double-check when he unfurled Old Glory — he got more than he wanted. Large or small, the American Flag is supposed to be flown with pride, a symbol of our nation. The seven red stripes represent hardiness and valor; six white stripes stand for for purity and innocence. There's a...
