When another officer tried making an arrest, four to five people tried grabbing an officer and pulling away. "The officers do what they have to do, and their safety dictated that they responded in a way where at least a few people had to get away. Just because they got away Sunday...

The area between the old and new bus stations in south Tel-Aviv is on its way to becoming a ghetto made up of African refugees living in the most squalid of conditions and turning the already run-down area into a time bomb the municipality can no longer ignore. The few blocks adjacent to the new bus terminal are crawling with close to a thousand African refugees, with the lucky ones crammed into 8 dilapidated bomb-shelters while hundreds more sleep out in Lewinsky Park bordering Lewinsky, Har Zion, Levander, Matalon and Golomb streets. The area is already home to about 40,000...

It was inevitable that someone would describe the 21-year-old suspect in last weekend's street killing in the Warehouse District as "a good kid." But good kids don't bring guns to movies. And groups of good kids don't storm into cinemas shouting, cursing, flashing gang signs and picking fights with rivals, all of which apparently led to a melee, then gunfire, outside of Block E and the shocking death of an innocent pedestrian. Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and police officials insist that the tragedy was an aberration and that the district is safe.

SAN DIEGO – Hundreds of protesters who had gathered in Chicano Park Friday morning began marching toward downtown around noon to demonstrate against proposed changes to federal immigration policies. Police estimated the crowd at around 1,500 protesters, including students and others. The group began marching through city streets during the lunch hour. About 1,100 students didn't show up for classes at San Diego city schools Friday, a school district spokesman said. Students around the county – and in other locations – have staged protests all week. “We have been bracing for a big day,” said city schools spokesman Steven Baratte....

Consensus has been reached among civil rights leaders, downtown business interests and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on a Skid Row cleanup plan that involves a crackdown on crime, but not sweeping up the homeless from the streets. It is the first time that downtown business interests and civil libertarians have agreed on an approach for downtown's destitute Skid Row, which is home to an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 homeless people. The American Civil Liberties Union and business leaders have endorsed a plan by criminologist George Kelling, who has called for police to crack down on drug dealers, prostitutes and other criminals...

Downtown turns war zone Friday, March 10, 2006 By NADIA MOHANDESSI About 60 Air Force personnel flooded lower Dauphin Street and the surrounding area Thursday night in mock combat battles that looked a little more like a scene from West Side Story than one from downtown Baghdad. With less singing and dancing, of course. The U.S. Air Force Weapons School's 14th Weapons Squadron, based out of Hurlburt Field, Fla., staged simulated combat scenes beginning shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday near Bienville and Cathedral squares to show personnel flying an AC-130 Gunship aircraft what different urban combat scenarios looked like from...

Under Downtown Prague Volume 58 Number 6, November/December 2005 by Nick Holdsworth The Czech Republic's biggest excavation reveals layers of history.(Courtesy Archaia) Every Czech school child knows the story. Prague was a crowded medieval city bursting at the seams when, in 1348, its problem was solved at a stroke by the brilliance of Charles IV. The greatest of Czech kings ordained that a massive swathe of farmland around the walled city should become a new urban space called Nove Mesto, or New Town. The Prague we know today is said to be largely a product of Charles IV's effort at...
