When Obama Was Just ‘Dumpling Ears’ When US President Barack Obama officially visits Indonesia in June, classmates from his elementary school days are looking forward to seeing him again. They may have known him for less than two years at school in the early ’70s, but Barry Soetoro, as Obama was then known, has become a source of inspiration and pride for many of his former classmates, said Rully Dasaad, one of those who befriended little Barry at Sekolah Dasar Negeri Besuki in Menteng. “Barry affected our lives in a way,” Rully said. “He helped shape our personalities. China traces dumpling poisoning to factory Sat Aug 30, 2:22 AM ET A row over pesticide-laced Chinese dumplings has moved a step closer to a settlement after China told Japan that a factory worker was probably to blame, NHK public television said on Saturday. Ten Japanese became sick after eating pesticide-contaminated dumplings which had been imported from China, stirring intense media coverage earlier this year. Japan and China have long been at odds over where the dumplings were contaminated, with both denying sabotage in their home countries. Earlier this month, the Japanese government said China had told Japan in July...

China finds pesticide in 'nikuman' exports BEIJING (Kyodo) China said Friday it has found small traces of pesticide in two batches of "nikuman" meat buns bound for Japan. The poisonous chemical found in the food is the same kind discovered in the Chinese-made frozen "gyoza" meat dumplings that poisoned 10 people in Japan late last year and early this year. But a statement from China's quarantine and safety watchdog said the traces of the chemical, methamidophos, found in the buns was small and that the pesticide probably got into the products through ingredients such as vegetables. Japanese police believe the...

(BEIJING) -- No harmful chemicals were found in Chinese dumpling exports involved in a food poisoning incident in Japan, said China's quality watchdog on Thursday. The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said it conducted tests on the samples of the two batches of frozen dumplings causing poisoning Japan on Thursday morning and no trace of pesticide remains were found. Tests on the raw materials being used by the factory such as ginger and cabbage show they are also safe. At least 10 people in Japan's Hyogo and Chiba prefectures reported stomachache, vomiting or diarrhea after eating the...

Eatery closed for selling cardboard-stuffed buns Created: 2007-7-12 12:00:26 Author:Alice Gu BEIJING authorities yesterday closed a dim-sum restaurant that sold steamed cardboard-stuffed buns, Beijing Times reported today. The cardboard was a substitute for pork. The restaurant owner fled and is wanted for questioning. The raid came after the restaurant in Beijing's Chaoyang District was reviewed by a local TV station a few days earlier. The stuffing of the bun was made of cardboard and pork fat, said the TV program. The recipe went like this: Cardboard was soaked in water and an industrial-use caustic soda, a poisonous chemical, was added....
