El Paso County Sheriff Richard D. Wiles said he wants representatives who will stand up against racism after a white man was accused of going into an El Paso shopping center with the intent to kill Hispanic people. Twenty people were killed in the shooting rampage and another 26 injured on Saturday. That night, Wiles released a statement on Facebook that called for representatives to combat racism. “This Anglo man came here to kill Hispanics,” he wrote. “I’m outraged and you should be too. This entire nation should be outraged. In this day and age, with all the serious issues...

A man accused of shooting a Colorado Springs police officer in the head in a shootout early Thursday while free on bond was known to immigration enforcement officials, yet evaded deportation despite a string of crimes, court records show. Why Karrar Al Khammasi wasn’t deported was among the questions left unanswered Friday as his bond was revoked. Cem Duzel, the officer he is accused of shooting, remained hospitalized in critical condition. The 31-year-old Iraqi immigrant appears to have lived in the Pikes Peak region for at least five years, and he had at least nine contacts with police in that...

A new Gazette poll shows Donald Trump dominating Hillary Clinton among El Paso County voters even as other recent surveys have the blunt-talking billionaire trailing the former first lady among voters statewide. Despite a campaign that has courted controversy almost from the start and weathered a rash of allegations about Trump's behavior toward women, the survey finds the Republican New York real estate mogul leading Democrat Clinton 50 percent to 32 percent in El Paso County in a two-way race. Trump bests Clinton 47 percent to 30 percent when Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson and Green Party contender Jill Stein,...

El Paso area leaders gathered Friday evening at a news conference to express their solidarity with Dallas after five law enforcement officers were killed and six others were injured in a sniper attack. El Paso County Sheriff Richard Wiles offered condolences, while state, county, and city officials discussed the attack’s impact on the country, Texas, and El Paso. But it was a comment made by El Paso’s African-American Police Chief Greg Allen after the news conference that drew the most attention. Though Allen was laconic and vague in most of his answers to the press, he opened up when it came...

DENVER — If Colorado is becoming the epicenter of the national debate on gun control, Colorado Springs is proving to be an interesting battleground for the issue. The city is home to Democratic Senate President John Morse, who is proposing Colorado hold manufactures and sellers of military style assault weapons strictly liable for damages caused by the firearms. It’s a move some are calling a back-door ban on semi-automatic rifles and others are calling an innovative step toward getting control of the deadly guns. Morse met Thursday in Denver with the president of the National Rifle Association. Across the aisle...

EL PASO -- When the 81st Texas Legislature convenes next month, El Paso County will be taking a stand against any bills that could be deemed "anti-immigrant." "Our lobbyists already are being put on notice by a result of you passing this resolution that anti-immigration legislation is something you all are interested in," said County Attorney José Rodriguez, explaining Monday's action. So far, state lawmakers have already filed nearly a dozen bills including the word "immigrant" and nearly a half-dozen including the words "immigration status;" it's bills like these that the county now says it's planning to officially weigh in...

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- The race to secure voters is on for Democratic and Republican volunteers. This year El Paso County could determine which way Colorado swings. Nearly 374,000 people in El Paso County are registered voters, making it the second largest in the state only to Denver County which has just over 400,000 registered voters. Nearly 166,000 in the county are registered Republicans. Only just over 85,000 are registered Democrats. This becoming one of the most discussed presidential elections, and because of that we've seen registered significantly increase across party lines. But here's what's significant in El Paso County....

A two-year ban on long-term toll road leases with private companies, pockmarked with exceptions and thus largely symbolic, cleared a Texas Senate committee Wednesday on a unanimous vote. However, the more meaningful action on toll roads should begin in the next two weeks, when a large bill addressing a wide range of concerns over tollways will be introduced in the Senate. The much-publicized moratorium bill by Robert Nichols, R-Jacksonville, Senate Bill 1267, has an excellent chance of passing the Senate, given that 29 of 31 senators have either signed on as co-sponsors or voted for it in committee. But despite...
