It is obvious that Republicans in Congress don’t understand America’s gun problem. But Sen. Ted Cruz has taken that ignorance to a new level. The GOP loves to point out, erroneously, that Chicago has the toughest gun laws in the nation, yet the murder rate is the highest. Neither point is accurate, but that hasn’t stopped Republicans, including Donald Trump, from spreading the lie. Chicagoans are used to being the scapegoat for lawmakers who don’t have the guts to do the right thing when it comes to passing sensible gun legislation. But when self-serving politicians try to shirk their responsibility...

Donald Trump’s current con job – spreading lies about the migrants who are walking through Mexico, seeking to terrify his fans into voting on November 6 – is just his latest attempt to weaponize fear for political gain. He’s been playing that card, successfully so, since he rode his escalator on day one of his craven candidacy, but his “caravan” demagoguery actually reminds me of a tactic that right-wingers concocted way back in 1934. I’ll explain that shortly. By now you’ve probably heard the fake news, because it’s virtually impossible to escape it. For his closing argument on the eve...

Federal regulators have voted to impose severe restrictions on salmon fishing off the coasts of Oregon and Northern California to protect dwindling populations in the Klamath River. The Pacific Fishery Management Council decided to close about 700 miles of coastline to commercial salmon fishing for most of June and July. Those are generally the most productive months of the season.

One does not expect honor from those operating in an illegal system. And let's face it, if our Constitution is supposed to be the "law of the land," the federal government we have now must be the most successful illegal operation in the history of this nation. The U.S. Supreme Court has said many times that when we look for an explanation of what is meant (what was intended by the authors) in the Constitution, one should turn to The Federalist Papers as an expert source for guidance. That being so, we see that we now have a government greatly...

Here's a quick question for all you Constitutional scholars: Which of the enumerated powers authorized to the federal government are described in the Bill of Rights? None, of course. Except in later amendments, regulatory powers given the federal government by the Constitution of the United States are listed in the body of the Constitution. The Second Amendment, then, is something else. When we are unsure about the exact meaning of a section of the Constitution, the Supreme Court instructs that we should look to The Federalist Papers for clarification. In Cohens v. Virginia the Court said: "Its intrinsic merit entitles...
