  • Someone here asked about unsolicited faxes earlier this month...

Earlier this month, I read a FR thread discussing unsolicited faxes... then today I received one of those offending faxes! Unfortunately, the earlier thread didn't come up with any answers regarding the initial poster's question: who keeps sending those unwanted faxes? As a Freeper since 01/98, I felt a civic duty to look into this matter that has troubled me & my fellows netizens. The faxes, entitled "Hot Stocks On The Street", mention in the fine print that they are sent out by a company named Pathfinder Marketing. Pathfinder's faxes also mention that they took money from another company called...
  • Congress is about to LEGALIZE junk faxes

Junk Fax Prevention Bill of 2005 will actually LEGALIZE junk faxes. This bill passed out of committee on April 14, 2005 and now goes to the Senate floor for a vote which can happen at any time. It's being positioned as just "restoring" the status quo when in reality the EBR exemption is totally new. Please call both your Senators to object to this bill immediately (instructions on the link).

THE Sunday Times has tracked down a mysterious middleman who was a key figure in the notorious Niger uranium hoax before the Iraq war, writes Nicholas Rufford. Speaking to a reporter in a cafe in Brussels last week, he claimed he had been an unwitting dupe in the scam, which embarrassed both Tony Blair and George W Bush over Saddam Hussein’s phantom weapons of mass destruction. The middleman, an Italian who uses the name Giacomo, is a small-time tipster said to have worked for Italy’s armed forces and intelligence services. He says Sismi, the Italian foreign intelligence service, used him...

FCC Delays Junk Fax Rules Until 2005 The Associated Press Tuesday, August 19, 2003; 12:19 PM The Federal Communications Commission has delayed until 2005 a new rule requiring companies to obtain written permission before sending unsolicited faxes. The new regulations originally were to take effect next Monday, but the commission earlier this week agreed to delay the starting date to Jan. 1, 2005. The FCC said the delay will give businesses more time to get signed approval forms from people to whom they want to send faxes, and will provide more time for the commission to respond to requests to...

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Federal Communications Commission issued a record fine of nearly $5.4 million Wednesday against a company for sending "junk faxes" to businesses and consumers. The fine against Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based Fax.com is the largest ever by the commission for violations of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. The law protects against unsolicited faxes, telemarketing calls and prerecorded messages, among other things. "Fax.com appears to have founded its business on the practice of sending unsolicited faxes in flagrant violation" of the law, Kathleen Q. Abernathy, an FCC commissioner, said in statement. "Despite repeated warnings from the commission and numerous...
