Just observed what appeared to be 3 or 4 jet aircraft, (military type fighter aircraft), following a commercial airliner, westbound into LAX about 2 minutes ago. From the OC area. My first thought was possibly AF-1 but I don't think POTUS is in the region.

June 2, 2005 — Nine French fighter jets and a French weather plane had to make emergency landings at Atlantic City International Airport. Bad weather prevented them from flying back to their aircraft carrier, which is off the east coast. They landed because they were running light on fuel. Now the problem is everyone is waiting for officials from the French embassy to show up with money to buy more gas. The French planes are here for the air show at McGuire this Nine French fighter jets and A French weather plane had to make emergency landings at Atlantic City...

Ten French fighter jets were forced to land at Atlantic City International Airport after weather problems prevented them from returning to their aircraft carrier in the Atlantic Ocean off the New Jersey coast, authorities said Friday. One of the jets was apparently disabled, and the U.S. State Department was contacted by French officials after one of the pilots tried to buy fuel and couldn't because he didn't have the available funds on his credit card, Philadelphia television station WPVI-TV reported. "I think they were all part of a squadron that was in formation," said Jim Peters, a spokesman for the...

  • China denies selling jets to Zimbabwe

Mainland China's ambassador to South Africa has denied that his government has sold 12 fighter jets to Zimbabwe. Ambassador Liu Guijin said both China's ambassador to Zimbabwe and his government in Beijing had said the original report in Zimbabwe's Mirror newspaper was "baseless". Liu was speaking at a joint press briefing with Deputy Foreign Minister Aziz Pahad on this week's visit to South Africa by Chinese Vice-President Zeng Qinghong. Asked earlier if South Africa intended to raise the issue of the jets with Zeng, Pahad said he knew nothing about the reported sale, but South Africa would, in any case,...

April 2, 2004: For a long time is was said, only half in jest, that you built a new warplane by finding the most powerful engine you could and then building an airplane around it. That has changed in the last two decades. The engine and the airframe are now easy, the software to make everything work together is the hard part. The F-22 software comprises some two million lines of source code (the text and numbers that are converted, or "compiled', into computer readable instructions). This code is complex, and it must work reliably for long periods of time,...

The German government swiftly rejected a proposal from Warsaw to contribute troops to a Polish occupation zone in Iraq, saying it would not consider any economic or military role in the defeated country without a clear United Nations mandate for reconstruction. This seemed to dash hopes in Washington that Germany would break with France on their mutual insistence upon a major role for the UN in Iraq. Defense Minister Peter Struck told the Bundestag parliament that Germany would not send troops to Iraq as part of a larger unit comprising Danish and Polish troops, government spokesman Bela Anda said on...

More than 50 fighter aircraft, anti-aircraft missiles and guns and huge amounts of ammunition have been found buried and hidden at a base in western Iraq. The aircraft, many in good condition, included three Russian-made Mig 25s, one of the fastest fighters in the world. Some were buried, while others were concealed in buildings and under camouflage netting. The find by Australian forces represents as much as half of Iraqi air combat power, and came as a fourth Iraqi from America's "most-wanted" list was handed over to US special forces by Kurdish fighters. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Some U.S. bombers, fighter jets and warships have been alerted for possible deployment to the western Pacific to deter any aggression by North Korea in case of a war in Iraq, U.S. defense officials said on Monday. The officials told Reuters that Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld had not issued any final orders to move B-52 bombers, F-16 fighter jets or naval units closer to the tense Korean peninsula, now gripped in a nuclear crisis. The additional forces have been requested by Adm. Thomas Fargo, based in Hawaii as head of U.S. forces in the Pacific and Asia...

This question arises elsewhere and I'd be most grateful for good information. What's the fuel burning rate for a modern fighter jet? I suppose we'd need a couple of figures, for maximum power and for cruising. I'm just looking for ballpark figures so don't much care which U.S. fighter or which branch of service -- but pick one that's operational right now, e.g., ready for Iraq. P.S. I've heard some figures I cannot believe, so I'll be the more interested in a correction. Thanks in advance.

Russia will dispatch 10 fighters this year, while another 22 are to be delivered next year.
