It’s an odd tradition that adds a dose of suspense to the holiday season. Every year, a giant straw goat is erected in the town of Gävle, Sweden, and every year, arsonists try to burn it down. A local resident explains that this delights many townspeople. The tradition began in 1966, when the first Christmas goat was built in downtown Gävle to attract shoppers. On New Year’s Eve, a pyromaniac set it alight, and was later caught. Since then, the goat has been burnt down 26 times; more often than not, the perpetrators are never identified. This year, though firemen...

Editorial: Fires are terrible, arson is worse Amid so much tragedy and destruction, some of it appears deliberate An Orange County Register editorial We had hoped beyond hope that, somehow, in this season when all the conditions, including a devastating lack of rain, were ripe for the kind of wildfires that are a regular feature of life in what we like to think of otherwise as near-paradise, we miraculously would be spared. But it was not to be. Our dismay is doubled, however, by the circumstances that authorities believe caused the fire that has burned at least 8.800 acres in...

Authorities arrested a 44-year-old man Friday who they suspect set nine fires in two days south of Sierra Vista. Mario Martinez Gurrola of Mexicali, Mexico, was arrested early Friday after four vehicles - including a tractor-trailer rig - and a mobile home were torched Wednesday, according to a news release from the Cochise County Sheriff's Department. Evidence from the scenes in the communities of Hereford and Palominas, as well as similarities the fires shared, led the Sheriff's Department, Bisbee police and the fire officials to conduct an undercover operation Thursday night, the release said. That night, four more vehicles in...

The FBI's capture of a prominent figure in what it calls the nation's worst domestic terrorist threat may do little to slow the radical environmental movement known as the Earth Liberation Front, federal authorities acknowledge. The suspect, Tre Arrow, also known as Michael Scarpitti and numerous other pseudonyms, is a charismatic figure who has run for political office before running from the law after being accused as the ringleader in a pair of environmentally motivated arson attacks. "It's a very big capture for us," said Beth Anne Steele, spokeswoman for the Portland, Ore., office of the FBI. "[The suspect has]...
