Advance voting shows positive signs for Hillary Clinton in two states that could help her lock up the presidency, North Carolina and Florida, as the election enters a critical, final stretch. There are encouraging signs for Donald Trump in Ohio. That's a vital state for the Republican presidential nominee, but a victory there would be only one of many steps he would need to win. The latest data, representing at least 758,000 ballots cast — and millions more requested — highlight Trump's difficult path to the White House. And these numbers may understate his problems: The figures don't yet reflect...

The University of Florida administration is preparing for upcoming Halloween festivities by reminding students that the school’s “Bias Education and Response Team” is prepared to handle complaints about offensive costumes. Additionally, the school will provide 24/7 counseling services to anyone who is offended by a particular costume. An administration newsletter published on October 10 warns students “to think about your choices of costumes and themes . . .” because “[s]ome Halloween costumes reinforce stereotypes of particular races, genders, cultures, or religions. Regardless of intent, these costumes can perpetuate negative stereotypes, causing harm and offense to groups of people.” The newsletter...

My wife Mary and I live in central Florida. Hurricane Matthew was expected to hit us around 8am Friday morning. Around 5pm Thursday, I decided to pick up a few groceries. It was too late. Every supermarket was closed. Streets were empty. It felt like I was driving on the set of a sci-fi movie. We lost power 10pm Thursday night. Mid-morning Friday, the worst of the storm had passed us. Thank God we only lost one tree, which missed our house, and one section of our fence. Mary and I took a ride to assess neighborhood damage. The streets...

Donald Trump's campaign is "pulling out of Virginia," a move that stunned staff in the battleground state, three sources with knowledge of the decision told NBC News. The decision came from Trump's headquarters in New York and was announced on a conference call late Wednesday that left some Republican Party operatives in the state blindsided. Two staffers directly involved in the GOP's efforts in Virginia confirmed the decision. The move to pull out of Virginia shows Trump is "running essentially a four state campaign," with the focus now shifting to battlegrounds critical to his chances in November: Pennsylvania, Florida, North...

A federal judge ordered Florida election officials to extend the state's voter registration deadline to October 18, in response to damage and disruption caused by Hurricane Matthew. The state's original deadline was October 11. Florida Democrats and the state's League of Women Voters asked the judge for the extension. Gov. Rick Scott initially refused to push back the deadline, saying late last week, "Everybody has had a lot of time to register."

MIAMI—Former Vice President Al Gore on Tuesday returned to the campaign trail in Florida, where his 537-vote loss cost him the White House in 2000, presenting himself as “exhibit A” on the importance of voting. “Please take it from me: Every single vote counts,” he told 1,600 people at a rally here with Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton. Mr. Gore reminded younger people in the audience that his loss to Republican George W. Bush was “very close”—so close that many Democrats believe the outcome would have been different if the Supreme Court hadn’t halted a recount of ballots.

With early voting already underway in many of the states that will decide the presidency, Hillary Clinton is beginning to reap the benefits of years of Democratic efforts to target and register voters, even as Republicans steadily close their disadvantage in party registration. The first wave of data from states like Florida and North Carolina shows preliminary signs that Mrs. Clinton was building a slight edge even before the revelation that Donald J. Trump had bragged about sexual assault roiled the race.

Democratic voters in Florida and North Carolina are requesting mail-in ballots at a significantly higher rate than they were at this point in the 2012 campaign, a promising sign for Hillary Clinton in what could be two of the closest swing states in the country.

With a little more than 24 hours before Florida's voter registration deadline, the state's federal court ruled to extend the deadline Monday. The final day Floridians can register to vote is now Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Florida Democratic Party filed suit late Sunday to try to force state officials to extend the deadline for up to a week to allow residents who fled Hurricane Matthew to continue registering. Governor Rick Scott had refused to allow more time. Thousands of Floridians fled areas threatened by the storm, and at least a half a dozen deaths in the state have been...
