A hybrid primitive-style match with paper targets is a hit with local muzzleloader club. There are several aspects to "primitive shooting" with our muzzleloading arms. This includes "loading from the pouch" instead of using a shooting box. It certainly includes using a patched round ball rather than the modern elongated bullets. And primitive shooting does include using targets that are not the typical bull’s eye style, and usually not paper targets. I want to illustrate how a primitive match can be held while using paper targets. It is easy and it’s a lot of fun. A couple of our targets...

I have my great grandfather's flintlock rifle as part of my gun collection. Am looking to collect American Rifleman magazines that deal with such a topic. The flint action has a "Joseph Gilcher" stamped on it and I know that that was a commonly made action back in the mid nineteenth century. I know you can buy off of Ebay, but am curious to know what specific issues I could order. I have one from March 1982 that has articles about Liberty Cap Contract Muskets and Christopher Hirsch's making of a custom flintlock for President Reagan.

Yes, that's right it's a flintlock pistol with a lantern attach to it. Unlike other flintlock muzzleloading pistols, this one has a vertical grip that comes UP from the rear of the barrel. The grip has finger grooves and a trigger, which is apparently linked to the gun's action via a link running down through the grip. A large trigger guard extends in front of the grip, encompassing all of the user's fingers. Read the rest here.

A retired teacher is facing 10 years in prison and the loss of his state pension for possessing a flintlock pistol that may not have been fired since George Washington was alive, his attorney told FoxNews.com on Wednesday. In a case that underscores the Garden State's strict gun laws, Gordon Van Gilder, a retired English teacher and collector of historical items, has been charged with criminal possession of a handgun and faces up to 10 years in prison. If the 72-year-old is convicted, the charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 3.5 years and the pension Van Gilder earned as...

Gordon Van Gilder, a 72-year-old retired schoolteacher in New Jersey, faces a 10-year prison sentence for possessing an unloaded 18th-century flintlock pistol in his car. Mr. Van Gilder, a collector of 18th-century memorabilia, said he had the gun unloaded and wrapped in a cloth in the glove compartment of his vehicle when he was pulled over in November by a Cumberland County sheriff’s deputy for a minor traffic violation, according to a video posted last week by NRA News. After consenting to a search of his vehicle, Mr. Van Gilder said he alerted the deputy of the pistol in his...

A celebration of lethal flatware. A new set of deadly eating-irons added for your pleasure and delectation. The knife, fork and spoon shown in the picture all have built-in flintlock pistols. Note that the barrels point backwards, towards the user, so they're not designed for plugging your host if he makes impertinent remarks about your table manners. It is difficult to imagine a social gathering where it is appropriate to shoot off your own elbows. The fork follows the pattern of the time; it looks pretty lethal on its own account. These weapons carry the maker's mark F X RICHTER...
