Say what you will about the tea party -- and I've said plenty -- they did have an effect on elections. The question now is, can the Occupy Wall Street folks have the same effect? We've seen the protests the past weeks, although they seem more splintered than anything else. They are outraged about foreclosure fraud, joblessness, student loan availability, wealth imbalance, the federal debt, the fate of the middle class, you name it.

Herman Cain is hitting back at Morgan Freeman for calling the Tea Party racist. The Republican presidential candidate called the Oscar-winning actor’s eyebrow-raising remarks “short-sighted” on Friday. "Most of the people that are criticizing the Tea Partiers about having a racist element, they have never been to a Tea Party," Cain told Fox News. Freeman, who endorsed Obama in 2007, created a firestorm when he told CNN’s Piers Morgan earlier this week that conservative opposition to the President has enflamed racism in America. He added the Tea Partiers have the mentality of "Screw the country, we're going to do whatever...

As President Barack Obama continued hurting this country as a failing president, compounding the progressive economic catastrophes of George W. Bush, The Gazette’s editorial board became fed up with the “birther” movement of conspiracy theorists who believed Obama was a foreigner. These people are to the right what 9-11 conspiracy nuts are to the left. On Feb. 17, this column stated: “The president enjoys an ongoing distraction that’s more valuable than anything he or his advisers could have contrived. "While the president pretends to cut spending — telling a whopper about proposing a balanced budget — a chunk of his...

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- In Florida, gun owners can't holster their guns outside of their clothing, but that could change if a piece of legislation turns into law. It's called "open carry" and it's drawing plenty of attention from advocates and opponents alike. Charles O'Meara of Shoot Straight, a firearms store, thinks the law would scare those who don't own guns and create opportunities for crime. "I don't think it's fair to make those people feel uncomfortable, but the bigger part is, what happens when someone walks up behind the gun owner and pulls the gun out of its holster?...

The Internet's been buzzing with talk about how members of the U.S. Tea Party movement have been getting out the vote for Bristol Palin on Dancing With the Stars. The blog Jezebel had a post about it today, complete with quotes from conservative message boards about how Bristol's supporters were exploiting ABC's email voting system to cast multiple ballots for Sarah Palin's daughter. Jezebel quoted one site, FreeRepublic.com, that urged its members to "make liberal heads explode" by voting for Bristol, "even though she is not the best dancer." Well, my liberal head is kind of exploding right now because...

COVINGTON -- Duncan Dohmen wants people to notice the pistol he carries. He isn't a police officer and tells people that when he's asked. He likes these chances to educate people about a right afforded them 219 years ago -- a right he fears could be stripped. "Rights not exercised are rights lost," said the 68-year-old resident of Covington in King County. "... I was walking around for 18 years with a pistol secretly concealed and it alarmed nobody. Then I realized that (openly) carrying a pistol might cause questions." So for the past two years Dohmen has openly worn...

In the opinion of Arlington Mayor Russell Wiseman, President Barack Obama's speech on Tuesday night on the war in Afghanistan was deliberately timed to block the Christian message of the "Peanuts" television Christmas special. Wiseman made the statements on his Facebook page, where he declared Obama to be a Muslim. Only people on Wiseman's "friend's list" had access to the post. He has more than 1,600 friends on Facebook. --snip -- At another point he said, "you know, our forefathers had it written in the original Constitution that ONLY property owners could vote, if that has stayed in there, things...

Police say he was "testing" the law, but one local gunowner says he was exercising his right to bear arms. Tuesday evening, witnesses called police after a man with a gun in a holster was spotted walking in the Taco Bell restaurant on Day Drive in Parma. Although the Taco Bell restaurant did not have any signs prohibiting weapons from being on the property, customers grew nervous. The gunowner, Bill Carlisle, says as soon as he walked out of the restaurant, he was surrounded by police. "I came, I ate my dinner, I walked out and there the police were....
