Georgia's governor has quietly removed Confederate Memorial Day and Robert E. Lee's Birthday from the state calendar, replacing them with the innocuous-sounding designation "state holiday." The change, first reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, was contained in a memo dated August 5 sent by Governor Nathan Deal to state government staff. The move comes amid increasing backlash against symbols honoring the Confederacy. In late June, Alabama removed four Confederate flags from its Capitol. The next month, the Confederate battle flag (which has a different design from the Confederate national flag) was removed from the Capitol grounds in South Carolina after Dylann Roof,...

Wow — what a week! I’m writing from in between stops on the #CruzCountry Bus Tour as we continue our #CruzToVictory through southern states that will play a huge part in making Ted our Republican nominee for President of the United States. As you likely know, the Republican candidates met in Cleveland, Ohio, for the first debate of the 2016 season on Thursday. And it was a great night for Ted — but don’t just take it from me:Frank Luntz declared the debate “great news for Ted Cruz.”Charles Krauthammer named Ted Cruz a “winner of the night.”The Press Enterprise wrote “Cruz...

For years, Confederate Memorial Day and Robert E. Lee's birthday have been on Georgia's official state holiday calendar. Not any more. The two holidays have been struck from the official calendar and replaced with the innocuous term "state holiday." A list of 2015 state holidays on Georgia's website proclaims Robert E. Lee's birthday on January 19, but notes it will be observed on November 27. It also lists Confederate Memorial Day on April 26 with its day of observance as April 27. A new list of 2016 state holidays reflects the change to "state holiday."

Conservatism can win but faces stiff headwinds from Republican leaders in WashingtonSen. Ted Cruz brings Red State Gathering to its feet repeatedly with a message of strong conservative policies. Cruz, speaking from in front of the podium without notes, said he welcomes the large field of GOP competitors, and joked that it’s different on the other side.“The Democrat debate consists of Hillary and the Chipotle clerk. [LAUGHTER] That’s not fair…Bernie Sanders has entered the race. [LAUGHTER] So, they have a wild-eyed socialist with ideas that are endangering American’s place in the world…and Bernie Sanders. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz brought his no-compromise message to the RedState Gathering on Saturday, thrilling hundreds of hardened conservatives who flocked to Atlanta with a pledge to reject “mealy-mouthed statements about acceptance and surrender.”Cruz received one ovation after another for his crowd-pleasing promises to repeal President Barack Obama’s healthcare overhaul, “rip up and rescind” the proposed nuclear deal with Iran and shower Israel with support. He vilified Hillary Clinton and other Democrats, but reserved some of his harshest attacks for fellow Republicans who have struck compromises across the aisle.“What exactly has this new Republican majority accomplished? Nothing? It’s actually worse...

Why the next seven weeks? Because fiscal year 2015 ends on September 30th and the settlers in the US State Department and in their contracting agencies want to hit the Obama target of 70,000 for the year and they have (as of July 31), 18,470 more to go! Actually that 70,000 figure that Obama announced in his Presidential Determination Letter to Congress last September is meant to be a ceiling, not a goal that they necessarily have to hit. However, since the contractors are paid by the head and they have salaries and office overhead to pay, they always try...

CANTON, Ga. – A Georgia elementary school launched a new program for upcoming school year that will rely on older students who just learned English to help teach younger students the language. Approximately 42 percent of our students are served in our program for English as a second language,” Canton Elementary School Principal Beth Long told WSBTV. That means about 336 of the school’s 800 students must learn how to speak, write and read English fluently, a process school officials contend takes five to seven years. ... • Why it’s now cheaper to produce some goods in the South than in China

Before World War II, red-brick textile mills that processed cotton and wove it into cloth were all over the southern United States, dotting the Carolinas, Georgia and Alabama. But in the last 50 years, automation, free trade agreements and competition from countries like China whittled down the historic industry until it was almost gone. Now some textile jobs are coming back, but on much different terms. As the New York Times reported Sunday, some Chinese manufacturers are setting up shop in the United States, after finding it cheaper to produce their goods in the American South than in China.

Occasionally, you come across a legal case so strange that it makes you stop and wonder, “Is this even for real?” Such a case has recently come to an end with a strong victory for student free speech rights and an equally strong rebuke to the idea many college administrators seem to have that they hold king-like powers on campus. The facts are as follows. In early 2007, Hayden Barnes was a student at Valdosta State University in Georgia (VSU) when school officials announced plans to build a new parking garage using $30 million in student fee money. Barnes, an...

A Georgia man who wrote he was "ready for jihad" before buying a one-way ticket overseas to try joining the Islamic State group was sentenced to federal prison Tuesday after he sobbed to the judge, "I am an American." Leon Nathan Davis III of Augusta was sentenced to 15 years, the maximum punishment allowed. A pale, bearded man with a Southern accent, the 38-year-old Davis pleaded guilty in May to seeking to help a known terrorist organization. He was arrested at the Atlanta airport last October trying to board a flight to Turkey. Davis later said his plan was to...
