A new study by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) warned that one in five adults reported being exposed to white supremacist ideologies in online games in 2022, with Jewish gamers experiencing the most harassment. The ADL Center for Technology & Society called the results of the survey a “startling increase” from the 8 percent who reported exposure to extremism in 2021. The Hate and Harassment in Online Games survey also found that 15 percent of young people ages 10-17 reported being exposed to discussions of white supremacist ideologies in online games, including popular games such as Call of Duty, Fortnite, Grand...

Bethesda has become well-known for its in-depth dialogue and deeply story-driven approach to game design, and its upcoming space-travel title Starfield looks like it will be no exception. The game will incorporate what Howard calls his "favorite speech persuasion system," which he says is set apart from the standard and will require a point-spending speech check system. "It feels like it's part of the dialogue, but you're spending points to persuade them," he explains. "It feels natural, not like I've entered some other mode ... I'm in this mode of persuading you to get what I want." Another topic of...

Twenty-two patients (18 in the case series and 4 via systematic review; aged 7–16 years; 19 males [86%]) were identified as having experienced suspected or proven ventricular arrhythmia during electronic gaming; 6 (27%) had experienced cardiac arrest, and 4 (18%) died suddenly. In 3 patients...

Overwatch 2's launch on Tuesday has so far been less of a launch and more of a line: thousands of players, including a few at PC Gamer, have been stuck in a lengthy login queue(opens in new tab), only to run into a connection error after making it to the menu. Blizzard president Mike Ybarra tweeted(opens in new tab) this afternoon that this isn't just the result of too many players trying to get in—Overwatch 2 is currently suffering a DDoS attack. Distributed denial-of-service attacks direct large amounts of internet traffic to specific servers, overwhelming them with more connections than...

A pro poker player is alleging that his opponent 'clearly cheated' during a livestreamed game of poker after she returned her earnings to her opponent. Garrett Adelstein has suggested that his female opponent, Robbi Jade Lew, could have cheated by using a 'device hidden that simply vibrates to indicate you have the best hand.'(snip) Lew, 35, suddenly made a call to go all-in despite having a relatively poor hand, leaving Adelstein and observers agape. Those commentating on the game were in disbelief because the odds were stacked against her with online betting casino DraftKings calculating there were around 150 ways...

The Washington Post cheered a reported ban of a gamer who made a pro-America modification that offended the rainbow-praising Big Tech overlords. The Post seethed in a story headlined — “‘Spider-Man’ modification scene turns into Pride flag battlefield” — about how the celebration of the newly released PC version of the LGBTQ+-friendly 2018 game “Marvel’s Spider-Man” was being spoiled by “United States flags.” Huh? In The Post’s own words, some gamers tried to thwart any celebration around last week’s release of the PC game “by taking aim at a very specific target: Pride flags.” The offending gamer, “a modder going...

Bethesda and Microsoft revealed yet another look at the ambitious “Skyrim in space” RPG Starfield during the two companies’ joint presentation today. This time, it was much more than eight seconds, and featured actually gameplay. After some preamble, Xbox boss Phil Spencer introduced a short Starfield sizzle reel before director Todd Howard took to the stage to show off the game in action. What was previewed looked like an amalgam between Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky and Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds, with the character mining rocks for resources and navigating a seemingly desolate planet. The character then gets into...

Why does the Millennial generation (people born between 1982-1996) have lower marriage and birth rates than previous generations? And when Millennials do get married, why is it at a later age than previous generations? Prominent periodicals like The Atlantic, Time, Washington Post and others have published articles trying to explain the phenomenon. Some claim that the cause is economic – we graduated from college into the 2008 Recession, we have a lot of student loan debt, and we receive stagnant wages as housing prices soar. Financial difficulty prevents young people from getting married. This is of course part of the...

Yet another version of Skyrim is here, as one fan has remade a portion of the acclaimed RPG in Unreal Engine 5. Skyrim’s Riverwood has been rebuilt in Epic Games’s recently released top-of-the-line engine, which is the prefect fodder while we wait for The Elder Scrolls 6. The Redditor responsible shared their creation in a 5-minute video (spotted by GamesRadar). The clip walks through the classic Skyrim settlement, showing off a few of its buildings and streets in dazzling graphical fidelity. It then cuts to what looks like the Western Watchtower in Whiterun, although this ruined outpost is a lot...

Once More From the Top: Why Video Games Do Not Cause Real-World Problems,The mainstream media loves to perpetuate a moral panic against the nerds. Following the horrific mass shooting in Buffalo on Saturday, many prominent voices in the media couldn't trip over themselves fast enough to blame the shooting on the one thing we know for sure wasn't responsible: violent video games. Going back decades, accusing gamers for the world’s problems is a popular pastime for the media. Too bad for these finger-wagging luddites that thousands of scientific peer-reviewed studies have repeatedly shown that there is no link between video...

Videogames based on blockchain networks appear to be a prime target for thieves, raising more concerns about the security of cryptocurrencies held on these decentralized gaming networks. Thieves targeting Axie Infinity, a popular blockchain-based videogame, made off with 173,600 ether tokens and $25.5 million in USDC, a type of stablecoin that is pegged to the dollar. The theft occurred on March 23, according to developers of Axie, but was announced publicly on March 29. At recent prices for ether, the heist was worth about $615 million, down slightly from the $625 million value when the theft was disclosed. Axie is...

The family of an Activision Blizzard employee who died by suicide in 2017 is suing the company for wrongful death. The complaint from Janet and Paul Moynihan claims that sexual harassment at the company was a significant factor in the death of their daughter Kerri Moynihan, a 32-year old finance manager at Activision Blizzard who was found dead at an Activision Blizzard company retreat in 2017. Moynihan's parents filed the wrongful death lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court. According to the report, Moynihan is the employee referenced in the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) lawsuit that was...

Valve’s Steam Deck is capable of being much more than a handheld game console. It doubles as a powerful Linux PC that could realistically be your daily driver. Because of that, some experienced PC gamers may feel completely out of their depth when booting into the Steam Deck’s desktop mode. ... And remember that Generation Z grew up without a basic understanding of filesystems and operating system folder structures. It’s not their fault. Everything is an app or Google search away now. They main their smartphones, not laptops. These users are asking very honest, very innocent questions. Don’t laugh. Don’t...

So what is Skyrim Anniversary Edition? No, it isn't some elaborate self-parody by Bethesda about its habit of re-releasing The Elder Scrolls V. It is in fact a new version of the long-running and ever-popular open world RPG from 2011 that Bethesda is launching for the game's tenth anniversary. Bethesda is calling it "the most definitive version of Skyrim to date," which I suppose leaves us open to the very real possibility of a Skyrim Extra Special 15-Year Barrel Aged Edition five years from now. In any event, Bethesda is launching The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition this November....

Thirty years ago, I was hiking alone on a section of the Appalachian Trail known as "Rocky Top" when I encountered two stocky young men. The thought occurred to me that they could easily kill me, toss my body in the brush, and get away scot-free. Whether the thought occurred to either of them, I will never know. I passed them by with a brief nod and moved on quickly to the turn-off leading to my parked car. But I remained troubled, and remain so today, by the fact that I had been so completely at risk. I had been...

Beijing (AFP) - Hundreds of Chinese video game makers have vowed to police their products for "politically harmful" content and enforce curbs on underage players, as the government cracks down on the entertainment industry. They also pledged to "put all efforts into anti-addiction work" and strictly enforce limits on children's screen time through facial recognition and other...
