NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — More than a hundred people have been arrested in the Bronx in what authorities are calling the largest gang takedown in New York City history. Authorities are expected to announce charges Wednesday against 120 alleged members and associates of two rival street gangs.

One of most dangerous areas in America has resorted to paying teenagers up to $1,300 a month as officials desperately try and stop gun crime. Gang members in Richmond, California, can also go on all expenses paid trips to New York and Washington if they are willing to travel with a rival. The programme, which is predominantly funded by taxpayers, was introduced in the city earlier this year.

Investigators believe Karlie S. Hveem, 27, was a member of a group that dubbed itself the "Chicken Chasers," with the work [sic] chicken used as a euphemism for money. Police arrested five members of the group last month as well, accusing them of selling heroin and cocaine.

For decades, a group of territorial surfers in Palos Verdes — the so-called Bay Boys of Lunada Bay — has been operating very much like a street gang, authorities and locals say. They are accused of staking out turf on a public beach and in the waves, and intimidating and assaulting people who dare to try to access that turf. Tires have been reported slashed, rocks hurled at visitors, death threats leveled. Pretty nasty stuff. An FBI operation into the Black Gangster Disciples, Vice Lords and Sipp Mob street gangs may provide some answers into the 2014 murder of a 19-year-old teen who was burned alive on a rural road in Mississippi.
