  • Why Low Sunspot Activity Portends Prolonged Climate Chill...

Fewer sunspots (weaker solar winds), allow more cosmic rays to enter the Earth’s atmosphere to ionize aerosol molecules, which condense into clouds that cause cooling. More sunspots have the opposite effect — fewer clouds — warmer surface temperatures. Whether present cooling continues or not, is there any reason at all to panic? No, and by the same token, when that good old global warming resumes — as it undoubtedly will along with intermittent cool-downs — let’s remember present conditions and be doubly grateful.

An unusually powerful storm is threatening the East Coast of the U.S. this week with heavy snow, high winds, and record-shattering cold not seen in some places since the early 20th Century — if at all. The storm will be the result of a combination of three strong pieces of atmospheric energy, known to meteorologists as shortwaves. Think of these shortwaves as protein bars for storm formation. This particular storm, which is already beginning to form off the coast of Florida, will devour enough of them to allow it to become so powerful that it will contain hurricane force winds...

While most of Ontario is under an extreme cold alert, the effects have resulted in some pretty incredible photo opportunities. Especially at Niagara Falls, which currently looks like a frozen winter wonderland. As of this morning [12/27], it felt like -19°C in Niagara, which has helped transform Niagara Falls into a frozen spectacle.

Shivering, snowbound cities are scrapping their outdoor New Year’s Eve countdowns. Polar-bear plunges are being canceled because of fears of frostbite and hypothermia. Winter-hardened towns are gaping at their new lows: 32 degrees below zero in Watertown, N.Y. Minus 36 in International Falls, Minn. Record-breaking snowfalls have stranded older and disabled residents inside their homes for days. Cars are buried under mountains of snow, and lethally low temperatures are forcing cities across the Northeast and Midwest to open emergency “warming centers” for homeless residents and people whose furnaces are no match for the cold.

(Reuters) - Snow piled up in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday after two days of record-breaking snowfall that had already surpassed 5 feet (1.5 meters), breaking city and state records, according to the National Weather Service. Though residents are used to winter snow squalls blowing in from adjacent Lake Erie, which straddles the border with Canada, the Christmas storm is already one for the ages. "This is an incredible amount of snow that we're trying to move," the Erie Police Department said in statement after the city declared a "snow emergency" on Tuesday, imploring people to stay off the streets.

And leaves academics stunned. "A study released Tuesday in the journal Scientific Reports found that snowfall on the highest peak in the Alaska Range has more than doubled since the start of the Industrial Revolution in the mid-19th century, which researchers attribute to climate change," Valerie Richardson reported in The Washington Times on December 19, 2017. "We were shocked when we first saw how much snowfall has increased," Erich Osterberg, an assistant professor of earth sciences who led the investigation with researchers from Dartmouth, the University of Maine and the University of New Hampshire, stated.

I previously warned that this is not my opinion, but simply our computer. If it were really conscious it would be running to store to buy heating pads. Snowfalls atop an Alaskan mountain range have doubled since the start of the industrial age, evidence that climate change can trigger major increases in regional precipitation, according to research published in the journal Scientific Reports on Tuesday. The study by researchers from Dartmouth College, the University of Maine and the University of New Hampshire, shows modern snowfall levels in the Alaska Range at the highest in at least 1,200 years, averaging some 18 feet per year from around 8 feet per year from 1600-1840. According to weather experts, this winter could be one of the coldest on record for Ireland. Snow showers will “engulf” Ireland and the UK in late November, according to a forecast chart on the Express. Piers Corbyn, forecaster for WeatherAction, said: “Apart from some cold snaps, the first half of November is looking relatively average for the time of year with some milder periods. It appears the summer hiking season may be over for another year, as many Swiss alpine resorts saw fresh snow over the weekend. A cold front saw temperatures fall last week and over the weekend, with many places in the lowlands experiencing ground frost. With the snow level dropping to 1,500m and heavy precipitation in many parts, on Monday many alpine resorts woke up to fresh snow on the ground. “Winter is coming, how to resist?” tweeted Verbier, its webcam pictures looking distinctly wintry. Laax, St. Moritz, the Jungfrau region and Crans-Montana were among the other resorts whose webcams showed...

Recorded temperatures at the Bureau of Meteorology’s Thredbo Top automatic weather station have dropped below -10C in the past week, after action was taken to make the facility “fit for purpose”. A record of the Thredbo Top station for 3am on Wednesday shows a temperature reading of -10.6C. This compares with the BoM’s monthly highlights for June and July, both showing a low of -9.6C. The BoM said it had taken immediate action to replace the Thredbo station after concerns were raised that very low temperatures were not making it onto the official record. Controversy has dogged the bureau’s automatic...

The official start to fall is still seven weeks away, but as of late it feels like it has arrived early. Temperatures for the most part have been in the lower 80s across Mid-Missouri, following a brutal heat wave that impacted Mid-Missouri in July. The cool weather has been welcoming and there are signs that we'll see even cooler weather track into the region.p Thanks to a series of rare cold fronts this summer, temperatures have struggled to climb back to average in Mid-Missouri. That changes as we head into Wednesday, as temperatures will moderate back towards seasonable averages. Average...
