<p>Mounting a spirited defense of his campaign fund raising and dismissing persistent allegations that his office is for sale, Gov. Gray Davis on Thursday said he has gone "the extra mile" to eliminate perceptions of corruption in the office.</p>
<p>"I go out of my way to let people know that my motivation is not financial gain, or any enhancement of my lifestyle," Davis said in a meeting with The Bee's Editorial Board. "My motivation is service. ... I have conducted myself in an appropriate fashion in accordance with the law, and I have no apologies for what I've done."</p>
