Highland Park, Illinois, celebrated July 4th in somber remembrance, one year after seven people were killed in a mass shooting during the previous running of the city’s parade. The community gathered in a ceremony to remember the seven people killed and dozens injured, and to “reclaim” the Independence Day parade route from the tragedy. Sen. Dick Durbin (Ill.), the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, is calling on his colleagues involved in bipartisan talks on gun reform to “do the right thing” following last week’s mass shooting at an elementary school in Texas. When asked by CNN “State of the Union” co-anchor Dana Bash on Sunday if lawmakers would take action following the shooting in Uvalde that left 19 students and two teachers slain, Durbin said the photos and stories of the victims have been “compelling” for lawmakers.

Paul, a strong gun-rights advocate, signaled his willingness to support something along the lines of "red flag" laws that allow guns to be removed from those who may be a danger to themselves and others. "I'm not opposed to sort of an emergency order for 48 hours and then you get a hearing in a court where you get the full due-process protections," he said in the interview. "It's the one thing that could fix a lot of stuff. I think most of these homicidal attackers ... are sending off signals to their family and community."

(Video at Source) CNN host S.E. Cupp made an emotional plea for gun control legislation in the open to her show Saturday, saying “we must do something about guns.” “For years I’ve made the case for the Second Amendment, the right to bear arms, I’ve defended the NRA and its members, law abiding gun owners like me who have nothing to do with gun shootings. I’m a gun owner and a gun rights advocate. I believed it was true. I’m no longer an NRA member,” Cupp said. “Being right no longer feels righteous because in the wake of more mass...

(Video at Source)On Friday’s broadcast of the Fox Business Network’s “Trish Regan Primetime,” host Trish Regan argued that gun control “could be this president’s Nixon in China moment.” Regan said, “You don’t want people who are mentally ill having guns or access to guns. The funny thing about all this, not that there’s anything funny about it.........Because who would have thought that a conservative, endorsed by the NRA, would actually be out there looking at so many common sense measures and reforms. I’ll tell you, this could be this president’s Nixon in China moment.”

L On January 15, 2015, Michigan's Governor Rick Snyder vetoed gun reform legislation that had strong support in the legislature.   Snyder cited concerns that were drummed up in a media campaign by the bill's opponents.  The bills sponsors consistently said that the complaints were baseless.  To obtain the governor's signature, the new legislature has removed the small bit of the legislation that Governor Snyder objected to, and passed the new bill, known as SB34 with over a 3-1 vote.  From mlive.com: LANSING, MI -- Michigan's Republican-led Senate on Tuesday, in its first official vote of the 2015-16 session, approved...

H.B. 234  is an 18 page reform of Ohio's firearms laws, though most of the 18 pages are existing law.  The reforms are simple commonsense reforms of provisions of state law that were unduly restrictive and made no sense.  This was reflected by the large vote margins for passage of the bill; 24-6 in the Senate, 69-16 in the House.  The bill now goes to Governor Kasich, who has not indicated if he will sign it or not.   Disarmists are already lobbying the Governor in an attempt to have him veto the bill.  Governor Kasich has 10 days from...

The Republican plan to block debate on Senate Bill 649, which requires background checks on almost all gun purchases and transfers, failed spectacularly Thursday morning when sixteen Republican Senators joined almost all of the Democrats to vote in favor opening debate on the bill. Among those voting to defeat the filibuster were 9 Democrats with “A” ratings from the National Rifle Association, and 12 A-rated Republicans (out of 16 Republican “ayes”). Two Democrats, Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR) and Sen. Mark Begich (D-AK), joined the majority of Republican Senators who tried to prevent debate, much less a vote, on the bill....
