The myth of the spat-upon Vietnam veteran refuses to die. Despite Jerry Lembcke's debunking book from 1998, Spitting Image: Myth, Memory, and the Legacy of Vietnam, and my best efforts to publicize his work, the press continues to repeat the fables as fact. Earlier this month, Newsweek resuscitated the vet-spit myth in a dual profile of John McCain and Chuck Hagel. Newsweek reports: "Returning GIs were sometimes jeered and even spat upon in airports; they learned to change quickly into civilian clothes." Nexis teems with such allegations of spat-upon vets and even includes testimonials by those who claim to have...

Recently, on a sunny day at high noon, an estimated 100,000 people were granted permission by city officials to take to the streets of Chicago to protest proposed changes to immigration laws [''In overwhelming display, immigrants protest bill,'' metro story, March 11]. Prominent politicians, including Mayor Daley, Gov. Blagojevich and U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), attended the rally in an attempt to capture some of the large, mostly Hispanic, immigrant vote. The march literally closed off and clogged vital downtown and adjacent neighborhood streets, sidewalks and intersections for hours, disrupting the lives of many of the million or so people...

On its official Web site, Northwestern offers an impressive biography of Law Prof. Bernardine Dohrn, detailing her work in children's law, her educational background, her academic appointments and other notable accomplishments. The university's profile curiously omits one of her most significant leadership positions: She was a principal organizer of the Weathermen, a radical cabal, during the late 60s and early 70s. Among its many criminal exploits, the group claimed responsibility for no fewer than 12 bombings between 1970 and 1974, and Dohrn spent a decade hiding from federal authorities to avoid prosecution for assaulting a police officer. A basic Internet...

The Right's Stuff A Texas-based band of conservative warriors tackles the left on its own turf--the street BY ROBERT WILONSKYOn a Friday afternoon in late August they've come to this street corner to raise their signs and voices to protest the venal forces that would bring down the United States. They brandish placards and peace signs, and passing motorists wave back in agreement, offer their own gestures consisting of a single middle finger or ignore them. The demonstrators are mostly white men, ranging in age from 16 to mid-40s, and among their signs is one that reads, in part,...

SACRAMENTO -- A Sacramento judge has thrown out the 14-year sentence former Symbionese Liberation Army member Sara Jane Olson received, saying a new hearing is needed to decide how much prison time the former St. Paul woman should serve. Olson pleaded guilty in 2001 to taking part in two attempts to bomb Los Angeles Police Department cars in 1975, and originally received a five-year, four-month prison sentence. The Board of Prison Terms scrapped that sentence in October 2002 in exchange for a 14-year sentence, saying Olson's crimes had the potential for great violence and targeted multiple victims. The three-member board...

This week, Kathy Boudin walked free after 22 years in prison. Back in the '70s, Boudin was a member of the radical Weather Underground. In 1981, after years on the run, she participated in the murder of a Brink's guard and two cops in pursuit of her revolutionary goals. Boudin now says she's sorry. She made a terrible mistake. As she told the Parole Board, "I had grown up wanting to be a doctor, and here I am and three people are dead, and I'm responsible for this." Boudin comes from a rich and influential family. In prison, she helped...

It may be too late to organize anything against this, but interested parties should know that former terrorists/leftist martyrs Bernadine Dohrn and Bill Ayers will be attending the 7:15 showing of the documentary/propagandistic puff piece The Weather Underground Friday night at the Lagoon Cinema in Minneapolis. I found out about this by reading the following (nauseating) review in the U of M's newspaper: http://www.mndaily.com/articles/2003/09/18/6569 More details are at the Lagoon Cinema's website at http://www.landmarktheatres.com/Market/Minneapolis/LagoonCinema.htm

September 17, 2003 -- It was hard from Day One to understand the rationale for paroling Kathy Boudin, the one-time child of privilege turned revolutionary urban terrorist. Apparently Gov. Pataki had some questions, too, because big changes at the state parole board are accompanying Boudin's walk to freedom this morning. While Pataki's office last night denied involvement, Parole Board Chairman Brion Davis is said no longer to be involved in its day-to-day affairs.
