NEW YORK - After several years of back-and-forth battles, a homeless shelter has opened along the so-called Billionaires' Row in Manhattan. The former Park Savoy Hotel on West 58th Street is now a home for around 140 men. It quietly opened last Friday despite repeated and costly efforts by neighbors to block it. Only a handful of men have moved in so far and move-ins will be staggered each week until the shelter is full. The shelter is being run by not-for-profit social service provider WestHab. It will serve those who are either working or actively seeking employment. The people...

The Lucerne is the latest luxury hotel to become a temporary homeless shelter. Some neighbors told CBS2’s Nick Caloway they were angry. Others said they were scared. “I’m worried about whether there are going to be a lot of homeless men just hanging around...

A Starbucks barista in England was caught on video trying to boot a homeless man as he chowed down on a meal purchased by a kind-hearted bystander outside the coffee chain. The footage, obtained by The Sun, shows the unidentified drifter, dressed in an open shirt, sitting outside a Starbucks in Southend, Essex, after a Good Samaritan spent $10 to buy him food after seeing the man savaging nearby. “Yeah, he can eat somewhere else,” a barista told the man and Sajid Kahhllon, who paid for the sandwich and chocolate cake moments earlier. “But he bought the food, he paid...

A Manhattan judge on Monday gave city officials the green light to open a controversial homeless shelter in the ritzy “Billionaires’ Row” neighborhood. State Supreme Court Justice Alexander Tisch rejected arguments from the West 58th Street Coalition and other opponents that the former Park Savoy Hotel doesn’t meet current safety standards and is unsafe in case of fire. Tisch ruled that while the only way out is through the lobby and the stairwell may be too narrow for both tenants and first responders at the same time, “these are all aspects for which the City and its agencies are supposed...

NYC police on watch for Port courthouse bomber By Andy Smith and Stephanie Akin Staff writers New York City police are targeting a man who bombed Newburyport Superior Court 28 years ago, saying he poses a threat to next week's Republican National Convention. But an anti-war activist group has accused police of trying to "smear" their reputation by linking the group with the convicted radical who terrorized New England with a series of bombings in the 1970s. New York City police say Richard J. Picariello, 55, is among 50 activists whose criminal histories will earn them extra attention next week....
