Soaring home insurance premiums in Florida are putting residents under unbearable financial pressure, with many telling Newsweek that they are considering leaving the state or moving somewhere cheaper within Florida. The state has currently the most expensive home insurance premiums in the country, according to a recent report by the Insurance Information Institute. Residents are currently paying on average more than $4,200 per year compared to the national average of $1,700, according to data from Triple I. While this is due in part to the increased risk of devastating weather events like hurricanes, other factors—including an excess of litigation and...

Just as wildfire season gets underway, homeowners insurance is becoming more and more scarce. Some companies aren't writing any new policies, while others are dropping longtime customers. Among them is an East Bay man who was told he lost his insurance -- based on photos taken by a drone over his property. It came as a shock. At first, he was told he'd lost his insurance because "drone photos" taken over his property showed hazards in his yard. But the company would not show him the pictures. Later he was told there was no drone, just aerial photos. He felt...

Property Insurance experts are weighing in on one state senator’s call for another special session to address the skyrocketing cost of property insurance for millions of Floridians. Gov. DeSantis is also urging patience, and quote “knocking on wood that we won’t have a big storm this summer.” “So knock on wood (that) we won’t have a big storm this summer,” he also said. “Then I think you’re going to start to see companies see an advantage.” “We have seen some projections that other companies may decide to take similar actions and withdraw from the state,” Friedlander said. “But we have...

Ron DeSantis, the rightwing Republican governor of Florida and a likely 2024 presidential candidate, has handed favors to his big-money donors in the insurance industry at the expense of cash-strapped residents of his state, a new report claims. The report, “How Ron DeSantis sold out Florida homeowners”, draws on contributions from the American Federation of Teachers union, the non-profit Center for Popular Democracy, the voting rights group Florida Rising and the dark money watchdog Hedge Clippers. [cut] the report’s authors suggest, that DeSantis’s administration has put the insurance companies’ interests ahead of Florida’s own citizens, who are battling homeowner insurance...

Caveat Emptor- By: Larry Walker, II -Have you checked your homeowner’s insurance policy lately?I’ve been with the same insurer for over 10 years through two residences. Even with the previous company my homeowner’s rates stayed about the same from 1998 through 2007. During a recent review, I discovered that my basic coverage amounts (i.e. dwelling, private structures, personal property and loss of use) have been inflated by around 3.0% annually since 2007, or slightly higher than the general inflation rate, and although I sort of get that, albeit the cost to rebuild is now around 150 times current fair market...

In a sweeping proposal, Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. has asked Congress to allow private companies to begin selling flood coverage in hopes of getting more people to buy it, reducing the burden on the federal treasury in times of disaster and avoiding disputes over the causes of hurricane damage. Although the proposal comes as floods are destroying towns across the Midwest where only about 17 percent of homes have flood insurance, the program has its roots in Hurricane Katrina's watery devastation and the ubiquitous flood versus wind disputes along the Gulf Coast. Nationwide, which does not do business in Louisiana,...

Is your wine covered? If you have a modest wine collection, which is not too expensive and primarily for consumption, it will likely be covered through your homeowners policy...Here is an easy test: If you store your wine in the refrigerator beside your Budweiser, then you are probably all set. For serious wine enthusiasts, however, the limits on your homeowners policy may not be sufficient in the event of a loss. Insuring wine is an easy process. No appraisals are necessary unless you have individual bottles that are worth more than $10,000.

Janice Harrison spent $4000 to fix the damage caused by a leaky water pipe under her house, and asked her insurance company if her homeowner's policy would cover some of the repairs.
