About 80 people gathered in Poncha Springs Sunday for a war rally supporting the U.S. military and to help propel them toward victory in Iraq. Sponsored by mayors of Buena Vista, Poncha Springs and Salida, the rally began about noon in Chipeta Park. Supporters moved inside to the second floor of the town hall at about 12:30 p.m. when snow flurries began. A victory rally supporting U.S. military personnel will be held in Chipeta Park on Burnett Street in Poncha Springs from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 21. The rally will be cosponsored by mayors Cara Russell of Buena Vista, Mark Thonhoff of Poncha Springs and Danny Knight of Salida. To demonstrate support, rally participants will have an opportunity to sign holiday cards for troops and donate items to be sent to active military personnel. CINCINNATI -- Cincinnati Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo is going to donate $100 for every strikeout to Homes For Our Troops, an organization that provides homes at no cost to injured or disabled servicemen and servicewomen and their immediate families. As part of the Homes For Our Troops program, one local serviceman or servicewoman will be selected as the recipient of a new home. Arroyo's contributions through his Strikeouts For Our Troops program will be donated to the general fund of Homes For Our Troops, which also features the Birdies For The Brave campaign of PGA golfer Phil Mickelson.

MIDDLEBORO — Someone with sticky fingers has stolen more than $4,000 worth of equipment that was being used to build a home for a Brockton veteran who was wounded in a tire explosion in Iraq. An upset Homes For Our Troops founder John Gonsalves said the theft of a generator, compressor and hammer drill was reported to Middleboro police Friday morning. He is asking that the equipment be returned. Wheelchair-bound and recovering from an explosion that paralyzed him, Army Staff Sgt. Eugene "Gene" Simpson Jr. was joking and laughing heartily as nearly 100 people at American Legion Post 364 here expressed their appreciation for his heroic service in Iraq. <p>BROCKTON — John Gonsalves III knows the effects war can have on a family.</p>
<p>His grandfather John Gonsalves, a U.S. Army infantryman, was killed in Normandy, France, in June 1944 during the week of the D-Day invasion.</p>
<p>"My life was changed 22 years before I was born," Gonsalves, 38, of Wareham said.</p>
