The 21-year-old son of a wealthy businesswoman and a 16-year-old were charged with murder today after the older man's mother was stabbed to death. They are due to appear in court this afternoon. Assia Shahzad, 40, suffered multiple wounds during the bloodbath at the £600,000, six-bedroom family home. Neighbours and family friends said that she was estranged from her husband. A friend said: 'Her husband does not live at the house. We have been told that Mrs Shahzad had been seeing other men.' Another added: 'Assia was a strong-minded, independent, modern woman.' Police said they were treating the horrific incident...

At least 5,000 women a year are killed or driven to suicide by fathers or brothers who think that, according to tribal tradition, the inferior female has shamed the family. It is most worrying that the custom has migrated to Europe and the Americas. In a series of articles in the UK-based Independent, concerning the practice of so-called honor killings and written by well-known Middle-East journalist Robert Fisk, the repeated appearance of the mobile phone is very striking, showing how medieval and modern are now intermingled. Daughters are told to commit suicide by mobile, sisters are phoned and asked to...

Thanks to an international outcry, Iranian officials apparently have "suspended" the death sentence against Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, convicted in 2006 for the crime of "adultery" (even though her husband already had died at the time of her allegedly "illicit" relationship). Yet her life remains hellish. This week, it was reported that, even as she was waiting on death row, Ashtiani got 99 lashes for the further crime of appearing in a Times of London photo without a headscarf. (The Times now concedes that the photo actually was of another woman -- adding an additional level of surreal suffering to what...

BUFFALO, N.Y., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Attorneys for a television executive charged with stabbing and beheading his wife can introduce evidence of "battered spouse syndrome," a New York judge ruled. Prosecutors in the case against Muzzammil Hassan said the decision by Erie County Judge Thomas P. Franczyk would force them to ask for a delay in the trial in the February 2009 killing of Aasiya Zubair Hassan, The Buffalo News reported Saturday. Muzzammil Hassan has been in custody since the body of his wife was found in the studio of Bridges TV, the Muslim-oriented cable station the couple had co-founded...

an “honor killing” of a 17 year old girl, Seyma G., by her brother “Y.G.” The brother accused with the murder was a member of the anti-democracy group Hizb ut-Tahrir. The murdered girl, Seyma G. had reportedly been staying in a shelter for women, fleeing family abuse. The international group Hizb ut-Tahrir is against democracy and freedom, seeks the creation of a global Islamic caliphate, and calls for the “death penalty” for “traitors” who leave Islam. The Hizb ut-Tahrir America organization had a conference scheduled for July 11, 2010 in a Chicago area suburb, that was canceled by Marriott Hotels.

I am Looking for a group that helps protect Muslim women who are under threat of honor killing. I am sick and tired of this and either want to join a group and help out anyway I can or start a group. Since the government and the police seem to refuse to acknowledge that this exist we need to do something on our own. If anyone knows of a group please let me know.

The first time, her father had sworn on the Koran he would kill her if she ever ran away again. Yet on the morning of Dec. 10, 2007, Ms. Parvez went home....

We usually associate jihadic warriors with fiery, anti-American and anti-Israeli sermons and with homicide bombings and airplane hijackings. We don’t think of jihadists as homebodies or in terms of their family relationships. But we should. Islamic fundamentalism (Islamism) is associated both with terrorism—and with Islamic gender apartheid. Thus, Islamists demand that their women shroud themselves, marry their first cousins, serve their brothers and father as domestic servants, keep quiet about routine daughter--and wife--battering, and keep away from infidel influences. If they don't, they risk being honor murdered. show me a jihadist and I’ll show you someone who believes in polygamy,...

A Muslim man has confessed to killed his wife and three others in Chicago this month because she refused to wear Muslim garb and adopt his new-found faith. He is one of many to have converted to Islam in American prisons. The confessed murderer is James A. Larry, 31, who confessed to the crime and expressed no remorse. During his most recent prison term, between 2002 and 2007, he began receiving visits by imams through the Islamic prison outreach program. “He became increasingly radicalized with orthodox Islamic beliefs," a detective on the case said, "ultimately demanding compliance to fundamentalist Islam...

Beheaded woman left statement detailing years of torment, tragedy. When Aasiya Zubair Hassan was finally ready to leave her husband, she prepared herself. She gathered copies of her police reports, photos of her beaten face, images of her ransacked house, scripts her husband made her memorize. Then she painstakingly chronicled her years of torment in a 21-page court statement that painted her husband as not just a batterer, but a cruel, manipulative monster. She detailed how he deprived her of sleep to "improve her personality," made her sign memos authorizing him to punish her if she talked with the police...
