Pastor Ronald Slaughter wore his Sunday best, plus a white hoodie sweatshirt as he preached his Palm Sunday sermon today. Slaughter and members of his congregation at St. James AME Church in Newark donned hoodies in honor of Trayvon Martin, the Florida teen gunned down by a neighborhood watch captain last month. Several congregants wore their hoodies up while others sitting in the pews came in regular dress. Slaughter, who wore a white zipped up hoodie sweatshirt over a shirt and tie, and other church leaders behind the pulpit wore hoodies but did not cover their heads.

A lot has been made about the hoodie lately. Not only has Geraldo partially blamed it for the death of Trayvon Martin, but it’s also become a symbol of unity for standing with the slain teen and his family. So when the Obama camp announced via Twitter yesterday that it was putting its 2012 hoodies on sale, it got some thinking: Is the President trying to capitalize off the death of Martin? It is not often that I agree with Geraldo Rivera, but recently he said something very practical and potentially life-saving, when he urged black and Hispanic parents not to let their children go around wearing hoodies. There is no point in dressing like a hoodlum when you are not a hoodlum, even though that has become a fashion for some minority youths, including the teenager who was shot and killed in a confrontation in Florida. RETAILERS have demanded Gold Coast staff enforce bans on hoodies and helmets in response to the city's armed robbery epidemic.
