WASHINGTON, D.C., January 31 (C-Fam) Last November at a summit in Nairobi, the UN Population Fund announced that it would take $264 billion to reduce global maternal deaths and protect women and girls from violence. The agency just released a publication outlining the details of how the billions would be spent—and the fine print includes abortion. One of the enduring legacies of ICPD in 1994 is the compromise that was struck among nations: that the legal status of abortion was for national governments to determine, and that where legal, it should be “safe.” In the past quarter century, the same...

(CNSNews.com) - There is a knock at the front door. Peeking through the window, a mother sees a man and a woman, both in uniform. They are agents of health-care reform.   “Excuse me, ma’am,” says the man. “Our records show that your eleven-year-old daughter has not been immunized for genital warts.”   “And your four-year-old still needs the chicken-pox vaccine,” says the woman.   “He will not be allowed to start kindergarten unless he gets that shot, you know,” says the man—smiling from ear to ear.   “So, can we please come in?” asks the woman. “We have the...

In his new history of humanitarian intervention, Gary Bass attempts to construct a model for international action today. Easier said than done, writes Matthew Price. Freedom's Battle: The Origins of Humanitarian Intervention Gary J Bass Knopf DH128 There are few more loaded phrases than “humanitarian intervention”. At once too broad and too narrow, it lends itself perfectly to empty sloganeering, and worse. After all, Vladimir Putin defended the invasion of Georgia partly on humanitarian grounds – to defend ethnic Ossetians – even if much of the world saw things differently. But Putin invoked the same kind of language Nato used...

Nearly four years have elapsed since the Oslo process (1993-2000) between Israelis and Palestinians foundered in bloodshed. Over that period, two U.S. administrations have tried to forge policies that would reduce the violence and point toward a solution to the conflict. It has not been a single-minded pursuit. Since September 11, 2001, the prime focus of Washington has been the management of unprecedented U.S. military interventions in the region, which removed regimes from power in Afghanistan and Iraq. The notion of Israeli-Palestinian peace as the key to regional stability has been replaced by the war on terror and the insistence on...

Drug War Casualties (Note: An edited version of this column originally appeared on FoxNews.com. It ran for two weeks. After a representative from Straight contacted Fox with concerns about accuracy, the column was pulled. As yet, no one has articulated to me what aspects of the column have been challenged. I stand by my reporting. That's why I'm reposting the column here.)In 1980, when Samantha Monroe was 13, a classmate passed out mini bottles of booze, similar to the kind served on airplanes. Samantha was given one, but quickly flushed it down a toilet when school officials were notified. A...
