A woman who faked a pregnancy for several months was found guilty on Tuesday of killing her former co-worker and kidnapping the victim's newborn baby with the intent to raise the child as her own. Yesenia Sesmas, 36, an illegal immigrant who was living in Dallas at the time, drove to Wichita, Kan. to shoot 27-year-old Laura Abarca on Nov. 17, 2016, and kidnap 6-day-old Sophia Gonzales. The baby was found safe two days later in Sesmas' Dallas apartment and was returned to relatives. Jurors deliberated for less than three hours on Tuesday and found Sesmas guilty of first-degree premeditated...

The man accused of killing a teenage girl in a car accident in Houston had previously been deported from the United States three times, federal records show. Edy Lopez-Hernandez, 27, was arrested after crashing into another vehicle and fleeing the scene Sunday. He was later determined to be under the influence of unspecified narcotics when he was driving "at a high rate of speed" and crashed into the rear of another car, according to Houston police. A 17-year-old girl in the back seat of the vehicle that he hit died on impact. Lopez-Hernandez, who is from Guatemala, got out of...

A transgender Honduran woman, who was part of the caravan of Central American migrants that arrived at the U.S. border earlier this month, died in detention on Friday. Roxana Hernandez, 33, died in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at a hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from what appeared to be cardiac arrest. Hernandez was first admitted to a hospital more than a week ago “with symptoms of pneumonia, dehydration, and complications associated with HIV,” according to a statement from ICE. Immigration officials identified the woman as Jeffry Hernandez, but LGBTQ rights advocates and caravan organizers said...

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos set off a furor over comments she made to members of Congress suggesting that schools should decide whether or not to report undocumented students and their families to federal immigration authorities. "I think that is — that is a school decision," DeVos said during her testimony before the House Education and Workforce Committee after Rep. Adriano Espaillat, D-N.Y., pressed her on the issue of undocumented students. "It's a local community decision and again I refer to the fact that we have laws and we also are compassionate and I urge this body to do its...

Taxpayers may be surprised to know that, prior to the enactment of the Tax Cut and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA), under certain conditions illegal aliens or undocumented immigrants could be claimed as a dependent on individual tax returns, which also allowed the taxpayers to claim various tax credits. Section 10 of the TCJA has repealed the old law, making it now impossible to claim this dependency deduction. The law does still allow individuals to claim qualifying aliens for certain tax credits. There are tax preparer due diligence requirements for some of these tax credits, and a new provision in...

The United States has imported more than 10 million legal immigrants in the last ten years, federal data circulated by the White House reveals. Since 2008, the U.S. has admitted and permanently resettled close to 10.8 million legal immigrants, a foreign population that exceeds the entire population of New York City, New York — where more than 8 million residents live. Of those roughly 10.8 million legal immigrants resettled across the U.S., the majority derives from the process known as “chain migration,” where newly naturalized citizens are allowed to bring an unlimited number of foreign relatives to the country. Nearly...

Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) is the leader of the discharge petition. Rep. Mia Love (R-UT), who supported Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) during the 2016 presidential election, has also signed onto the discharge petition. Rep. Mike Coffman (R-CO), who has signed the discharge petition, opposed Trump so much in the 2016 election that he ran ad campaigns against Trump. Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX), also a signer of the discharge petition, announced during the 2016 election that he could not “in good conscience support or vote for” Trump. Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI), an influential Congressman, signed the discharge petition as well. Upton...

WASHINGTON - U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan on Wednesday warned a small group of his fellow Republicans against forcing a floor debate on four separate bills that would protect young illegal immigrants from deportation, saying doing so would be a “big mistake.” Instead, Ryan said he was working with the White House on a singular bill that would win President Donald Trump’s support.

What are we trying to do? We are building mobile-friendly tools to help inform vulnerable immigrants of the risks they may face in their neighborhood or workplace, as well as enable legal aid groups, community organizations, and activists to mobilize rapidly to protect immigrant communities. These tools will deliver real-time, location-based, verified information about immigration enforcement activity. We are currently looking for people with experience in secure app development, public relations, nonprofit/NGO coordination, and immigration law to join us as volunteers or consultants, and for liaisons with local raid rapid response networks in any area of the United States. From the beginning of his campaign for president, Donald Trump portrayed illegal immigration as a forest fire that threatens to spread rapidly and engulf us all. Mexicans, he charged, are “bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.” He thought Americans should be afraid. The president and his attorney general ignore the real dangers posed by most foreigners here illegally: They will fill jobs that Americans don’t want, learn English, pay taxes and stay out of trouble. Chilling, huh? The president relishes lurid tales of the criminal gang MS-13. Last year, he said: “They stomp on their victims. They beat them...

By now almost everyone has heard about the escalating violence in London under its Muslim mayor, Sidiq Khan. If you aren't being stabbed to death in the UK's biggest and most important city, you risk having acid thrown in your face by one of the gangsters being welcomed by what is essentially the West's largest sanctuary city. A new report by the London Times confirms that death by the blade is not ravaging London but is spreading outward "from the cities to the suburbs to the shires." ['County Lines' Drug Gangs Spread Knife Crime Epidemic to the Shires, The Times, May 6,...

At first look, the city of Long Beach and county of Fresno could not seem any more different. But whether you’re a farmworker or an urban worker, there’s one struggle many people in our districts share: the human cost of being undocumented and uninsured. One in 10 California workers is undocumented, and one in six children in our state has a parent who is undocumented. Ensuring healthcare coverage for all Californians not only strengthens the health of our state’s workforce, but will move the entire state forward. Immigrants play a vital role in all aspects of California’s social, economic, and...

The Moakley federal courthouse is being turned into a wedding chapel for illegal immigrant criminals desperately trying to avoid deportation from the promised land of EBT cards, Section 8 housing, Mass Health cards and Obamaphones. Last week in a U.S. District courtroom, an illegal immigrant unlicensed alleged drunk driver was married to his “fiancee,” who happens to be the mother of his 21-month-old anchor baby in, where else, Chelsea. This week, it gets even more absurd — the “advocates” want to have a photographer in a federal courtroom to take pictures of the next lovely illegal immigrant couple, or two,...

The Trump administration will require 57,000 Honduran people to return to their home country, after having lived in the U.S. with protected status since a 1999 hurricane, according to a report Friday morning. The administration will give Hondurans 12 to 18 months to return home, according to McClatchy. Hondurans are the second-largest national group of people who benefit from TPS. A DHS spokesperson told the Washington Examiner that Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen "has not yet made a decision." But a decision is due by July 6 and the government has yet to formally announce the reported policy change. Elaine Duke, former...

Texas and six other states have filed a lawsuit claiming former President Barack Obama violated the Constitution’s take care clause when he created the program protecting immigrants brought to the country illegally as minors. “If ever there were a violation of the president’s duty to ‘take care that the laws be faithfully executed,’ ” the lawsuit says, “this is it.” The suit, filed Tuesday in federal court in Brownsville, Texas, challenges the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA), created by Obama in 2012. In prepared remarks, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said President Donald Trump has sought to phase...
