Who was Saint Patrick? Well, for starters, he wasn't Irish. He was born a Roman (Patricius) during the days when Britain was cut off from the empire immediately before the final collapse of Roman power in the west. Though not born an Irishman himself, Patrick had a deep and abiding love for the Irish and dedicated his life to bringing them to Christianity. In one of the most unbelievable stories in 2019 so far, Dundalk woman Lisa Smith has been arrested and is being held in Syria for alleged links to ISIS. The Dundalk woman worked for more than 10 years in the Irish Defence Forces, including flying on the government jet when Bertie Ahern was the Taoiseach. According to the Mirror, Lisa Smith appeared in an ISIS propaganda video where she claimed to be British, not Irish but it’s understood that this is indeed the former Irish soldier in the video.

Irish authorities are investigating if a former member of the Defence Forces (Army) has been arrested in Syria for alleged membership of Islamic State. The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that an Irish citizen is being detained in Syria. RTÉ News has learned that the person being detained is a woman, but her identity has not been confirmed. The impounding of two Northern Ireland fishing boats by the Irish Navy has been condemned as “quite outrageous” by the DUP deputy leader Nigel Dodds. The boats, the Amity and the Boy Joseph, were detained in Dundalk Bay on Wednesday for allegedly breaching fishing regulations. Zookeepers say a group of chimpanzees used branches weakened by a storm to make a ladder and escape from their enclosure at the Belfast Zoo. Video filmed Saturday by visitors to the Northern Ireland zoo showed several primates scaling a wall and perching atop it, with one walking down a path outside the enclosure.
