  • Democrats elect civil rights lawyer as nominee for US House

Kansas Democrats hoping to turn voter discontent into an upset picked civil rights attorney Jim Thompson to run for the U.S. House seat that Mike Pompeo vacated to become CIA director under President Donald Trump. Thompson, a 46-year-old political newcomer and Army veteran, will run against Republican state Treasurer Ron Estes in the April 11 special election. It will be the nation’s first special congressional election since Trump’s win, and Democrats view it as their best chance to flip the seat representing the heavily Republican 4th District in southern Kansas. After winning the Democratic nomination, Thompson, told delegates that the...

Free Republic traditionally frowns on vanities. I know, I've been a member here since 1999. I too have had my knuckles cracked by the Moderator's ruler and my posts promptly yanked or locked because I could have easily responded on an existing thread. Vanities crowd out the real news. They're too numerous to count, and most vanities do nothing but stoke the poster's ego (ME! ME! ME! I WANNA BE THE NEXT GEORGE WILL!). And most of them are frankly, quite boring. However, some vanities do serve a legitimate purpose. Breaking news, for example is one. When FReepers hear about...

Before the debate tonight, this lowly conservative Republican wants to voice my appreciation to Donald Trump and Ted Cruz (and the rest, past and present) for contributing to the best primary season I think I ever witnessed. Both made me think in different ways, and I'll definitely think of both whenever I finally make up my mind who to caucus for. Without FR, I don't think it would be possible for me to break out of the "herp derp who's the GOP nominee pull lever" mindset. Big thank you to administrators and posters alike!

  • Robert Redford to Play Dan Rather in 'Truth'

    07/09/2014 6:40:09 PM PDT · by TigerClaws · 100 replies
Robert Redford has signed on to play Dan Rather in Truth, a film based on the 2005 memoir Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power. The book, written by Rather's producer Mary Mapes, centers on the firestorm that erupted in September of 2004 after Rather reported that George W. Bush had received special treatment while serving in the Air National Guard during the Vietnam War, a report that was based on documents that turned out to be forgeries. - See more at:

Late last month, a SurveyUSA poll for an Atlanta television station put establishment Republican congressman Jack Kingston in front of fringe tea-party favorite Republican congressman Paul Broun by eight percentage points in the race for Georgia’s open U.S. Senate seat. On Friday, though, Kingston stood to lose that ground, as both he and Broun released campaign commercials featuring fake telephone calls.

The enigmatic and hard to locate founder of the conservative news and information site FreeRepublic has finally been located after years of searching. After spending millions in local "establishments" of ill repute our reporter Jim Thompson has finally tracked down this legendary recluse. Suprisingly he has been located living in the America's most liberal city, Boulder Colorado. According to our reporter, Mr. Anderson has been living in the liberal bastion and pot capital of the world in order to build up the mental anti-bodies required in order to sustain a full assault against the liberalism he is expected to endure...

House Democrats are blocking their Republican colleagues from using Obamacare in letters mailed on the taxpayer's dime to voters, but who made up the term in the first place? Lots of people are asking this question, getting answers like "Certainly a republican, potentially Glenn Beck" and "I am about 80% sure it was Rush Limbaugh" and "Hillary Clinton's campaign coined Obamacare." Iowa Rep. Steve King claimed President Obama himself made it up. Free Republic posters want to claim credit. Lots of liberals suspect an insidious plot by Fox News. But the answer appears to be: a lobbyist.

San Diego likes to claim the great 20th-century hardboiled detective writer Raymond Chandler as much as Los Angeles does. Although Chandler wrote about the City of Angels more definitively, it’s well known that he wrote The Long Goodbye, Little Sister and Playback in La Jolla, where he lived in the late ’40s and ’50s. Playback, his last novel, was even set there. Tours of Chandler’s San Diego are well-documented online in blogs: people visit his extant but renovated house in La Jolla; the soon-to-be-demolished Whaling Bar in the La Valencia Hotel, where several scenes in Playback take place; and his...

This one is for you, Jim Thompson! By hahyrningur Or maybe it’s for Jim Robinson. The left can’t seem to keep them apart. Anyway, Jim (Thompson or Robinson) runs the conservative forum Free Republic which for many years has been one of the main lightning rods for socialist, islamist and nazist hate in America. Denizens of that forum are called Freepers. I am won. Over the years, the Freepers have chalked up some pretty impressive and decisive victories. Remember “Sore/Loserman”, the graphic that played a huge role in defeating the Gore/Lieberman ticket? Freerepublic. Ripping the cloak of lies off Dan...

On the Monday morning after the Super Bowl, where, at the White House party the big game bill of fare was apparently fit for a (fat) king, Michelle Obama announced an initiative to persuade (cajole?) restaurants into serving smaller portions. I'm sorry, but even though I might agree restaurant portions are a bit large, from what platform of expertise or authority does this person speak? The last time I checked, she was a lawyer, unelected to political office. She probably has more credibility in the area of mesothelioma. Why does she think we care or revere her opinion on food...

The million-dollar question among Dancing with the Stars fans these days? How did Bristol Palin make it into the season 11 finals? "She deserves it," DWTS executive producer Conrad Green tells PEOPLE. "And a significant portion of our viewing audience believes that, too." SNIP Speculation has arisen about whether members of the Tea Party, many of whom strongly support Bristol's mom Sarah Palin, are involved in an organized effort to promote Bristol. On one conservative Web site,, some of the site's 300,000 registered users have recently used discussion threads to encourage votes for Bristol. One asked users to "make...
