Job interviews can be nerve-racking as many interviewees stress over how to best answer questions the employer throws at you. But, not every company asks tough questions. One boss revealed the “coffee cup” test he uses in job interviews to determine whether an applicant is right for the role. Former managing director for Xero Australia Trent Innes explained how he refuses to hire anyone if they fail to return an empty cup to the kitchen at the end of an interview. “I will always take you for a walk down to one of our kitchens and somehow you always end...

The number of open jobs in the economy decreased to 9.6 million in March, down from 9.9 million on the last day in February, as concerns about a recession later this year hung over the economy, according to data released Tuesday by the Labor Department. The 9.6 million open jobs in the economy are the lowest number since April, 2021. The February Job Openings and Labor Turnover (JOLTS) report was in line with the economists’ expectations and left the ratio of available jobs to job seekers unchanged from February to March at about 1.7— conditions that are still beneficial to...

…..But in the last few years, a number of factors have contributed to swift changes in how we work and where we work, which have revolutionised everyday life. Thanks to the rise of remote work, the four day week and flexible hours, there are now so many different ways to “make a livin’”. The question is: Has the day job gone forever? Just a few years ago, the idea that a large proportion of the workforce would be working from the comfort of their own homes – with their slippers on and a cat relentlessly trying to nap on their...

Hi Freepers Happy New Year! I humbly request a prayer for me and many others who feel skittish about their jobs. It would be wonderful if a great opportunity comes along or I can still keep my job for years to come. Alot of times, it's self-fulfilling prophecy (you can say lack of faith). I need to have more faith in God, believing that He protects from all harm. Amen. Thank you in advance for your prayers!

For our leadership team, the focus is on preparing the firm to weather these headwinds,” he added

President Biden’s job approval rating is holding steady in the wake of the midterm elections, with around 43 percent of Americans still supporting him, according to a new Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll. An October AP-NORC poll found a similar 43 percent approval rating for the president. The polling shows there hasn’t been much change, at least for Biden, since the midterm elections, when Democrats exceeded some observers’ expectations — beating back a red wave in the House and capturing the Senate. Taking a step back, Biden has dropped from a 48 percent approval rating a year...

U.S. job openings rebounded in September after falling sharply in August, according to federal data released Tuesday, despite pressure from high inflation and interest rates. American businesses posted 10.7 million open jobs by the final day of September, according to the Labor Department’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover (JOLTS) report, up from 10.1 million in August.

Nearly two years into his presidency, Joe Biden’s job rating stands at 38% – identical to Donald Trump’s approval rating at a similar point in his presidency, but lower than those of some other recent presidents in the run-up to their first midterm election. The trajectory of presidential job approval differs for each White House occupant. Biden began his presidency with majority approval: In March 2021, 54% of Americans approved of Biden’s job performance, and his rating rose to 59% a month later. But his popularity declined sharply last summer and has been in the low 40s or high 30s...

U.S. job openings dropped sharply in August, according to Labor Department data released Tuesday, falling at the fastest one-month pace since March 2020. Businesses still hired employees at a steady pace and kept layoffs near historic lows in August, according to the Job Openings and Labor Turnover report. But firms also cut back their postings for open jobs, a possible sign of businesses bracing for an economic slowdown. The number of open jobs listed in the U.S. fell from 11.2 million in July to 10.1 million in August, a decline of 1.1 million job openings, according to the Labor Department....

The US has received sufficient number of applications needed to reach the Congressionally mandated 65,000 H1-B visa cap for the fiscal year 2023, the country's federal agency for immigration services said on Tuesday. The H-1B visa programme is the most sought-after work visa among foreign professionals, including Indians. “We have received a sufficient number of petitions needed to...

Move over rage quitting, “quiet quitting” is the latest workplace phenomenon. It may sound like the act of someone silently resigning, but it actually refers to the rejection of “hustle culture” — the expectation to go above and beyond in your job, rather than simply doing the requirements of the job. It’s a term that has gained traction since a wave of TikTok posts recently emerged from people who consider themselves quiet quitters. TikTok creator Zaid Khan, @zkchillin, posted on TikTok about his own discovery of the term in late July — a video that went viral. In the video...

Only two things in life are certain - death and taxes, and the IRS can take care of both.As the agency prepares to add 87,000 new positions over 10 years, pending the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act that will give the agency $80 billion (half of which will be earmarked to help crack down on tax evasion), an online job posting for "Criminal Investigation Special Agents" has sparked outrage over a "key requirement" that applicants be "legally allowed to carry a firearm.""Major duties" of the job include "Carry a firearm and be willing to use deadly force, if necessary,"...

On Friday’s “CNN Newsroom,” Labor Secretary Marty Walsh said that he’s not sure that we necessarily need the job market to cool down in order for inflation to come down and that “we have to continue to tackle the inflation issues. But we’ve also got to continue to push to get people into good-paying jobs as we move forward here as an economy.” Co-host Poppy Harlow asked, “It’s a fact, is it not, that we actually need this job market to cool off to bring down inflation?”

There are two faces of today’s employment report. But let’s start with US average hourly earnings growth less inflation (aka, REAL hourly earnings). It printed at -2.8% YoY, meaning that inflation is causing REAL hourly earnings to fall. The good news is that jobs added in the latest report printed at +390k in May. This is only one face of employment. Yesterday’s ADP jobs added report was considerably lower at only 128k. Labor force participation rose to 62.3%, but remains below pre-Covid levels. The unemployment rate remains the same at 3.6%, but the underemployment rate rose to 7.1%. I cannot...
