An East Bay neighborhood terrorized by a swarm of aggressive bees over the weekend is safer now, authorities said. Concord police told residents Sunday the bees have been mostly eradicated after an amateur beekeeper got rid of a hive Saturday night. An Africanized breed of honeybees, sometimes known as “killer bees” because of its swarming, aggressive and deadly nature when its colony is threatened, has found its way to the Bay Area for the first time, researchers say. A South Texas farmer has died after being stung by hundreds of bees while using a tractor on a field near Rio Hondo. A 71-year-old woman and three firefighters Friday were recovering at a Riverside County hospital after they were attacked by thousands of killer bees. The incident happened around 4:40 p.m. Thursday in a gated community on Lucerne Drive in Palm Desert, CalFire said.
