MILWAUKEE (AP) U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl has hired a Democratic organizer to begin coordinating his run for re-election in 2006. The Wisconsin Democrat said Tuesday that he hired Michael Teter to start putting the campaign together. Kohl, who turned 70 Monday, announced over the weekend that he is seeking a fourth six-year term in the Senate. The millionaire owner of the Milwaukee Bucks was first elected in 1988 and won re-election in 1994 and 2000. Teter was Wisconsin field director for the Democratic Party's campaign last year.

Election 2006 Of the 15 senators up for reelection this fall who voted to acquit Clinton in 1999, only one was defeated, but it was a big one - prince of obstruction Tom Daschle of South Dakota. Now we turn our attention to 2006. The following 14 senators who will then be up for reelection also voted to acquit Clinton and therefore disqualified themselves for public office. Moreover, all of them voted for the Harkin amendment to the bill banning partial-birth abortion. All but two of them (Byrd and Conrad) also voted on 21 Oct. 2003 against the bill to...

BERLIN (AP) - Former Chancellor Helmut Kohl praised Ronald Reagan on Sunday as "a great friend of the Germans" for his role in bringing down communism and ending Europe's Cold War division. Kohl said he would never forget standing next to the U.S. president in 1987 when Reagan challenged Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down this wall," the last high point of Cold War rhetoric in West Berlin. "Ronald Reagan was a man who achieved great things for his country," Kohl said in a statement. "He was a stroke of luck for the world, especially for Europe." Reagan stood...

Kohl loses battle to keep Stasi files secret By Kate Connolly in Berlin (Filed: 18/09/2003) The former German chancellor Helmut Kohl yesterday lost a legal attempt to prevent the publication of thousands of pages of potentially explosive records compiled about him by the East German secret police, the Stasi. A court in Berlin decided that, as a public figure, Mr Kohl's files should be made accessible to researchers. The ruling, which overturns an earlier decision, is in line with a new law passed by parliament last year. Lawyers for Mr Kohl, who did not appear in court, said they would...

I appreciate knowing your thoughts about the nomination of Miguel Estrada to serve on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. Like you, I believe it is imperative that federal judges meet the highest standards, both personally and professionally. When a vacancy occurs on the federal bench senators from that state or region often make recommendations to the President on potential nominees. Once a recommendation reaches President Bush, the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation conduct extensive background investigations of any potential nominee before the President submits his or her name to the Senate. Upon nomination, a candidate...

With a cast of characters including a former prime minister, some of the richest executives in France and Germany, Paris' biggest-ever corporate crime trial continued this week with 37 defendants in the dock. France's largest-ever corporate corruption trial resumed in Paris this week with more drama than your average Mexican soap opera. The case offered further tales of illicit backroom dealing, a €5 million divorce settlement tab picked up by French taxpayers and allegations that a former French prime minister accepted bribes in connection with a string of acquisitions made by the state-owned French oil conglomerate Elf Aquitane in the...

Q: Many of your fellow-party members fear for the US-German-friendship, you too? Kohl: The government cannot destroy the US-German-friendship, because the foundation is too deep. Even if the relations to the US are horribly damaged: The damage is not irreparable. It will take more time than one election term to heal the damage. One cannot order trust, it can only grow - that is valid for the political as well as the private life. The whole debate in Germany is full of emotions by a havoc wreaking anti-americanism of the political left. Many of those, who today sit between the...

Kohl warns U.S. against ruling world "like Romans" BERLIN, March 4 (Reuters) - Former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl criticised U.S. leaders on Thursday for dreaming of ruling the world like Roman emperors, but laid blame on both sides of the Atlantic for the deep rifts over Iraq. Kohl, chancellor for 16 years and long a staunch ally of successive presidents from Ronald Reagan to Bill Clinton, said U.S. government officials had made a series of serious blunders in their dealings with European leaders during the Iraq crisis. "Those in Washington who dream about themselves being the new Rome and that...

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Former Chancellor Helmut Kohl accused his successor, Gerhard Schroeder, of "miserable politics" that have jeopardized Germany's position in the world. He said Schroeder especially damaged relations with Washington by campaigning on promises that German soldiers would not participate in a U.S.-led attack on Iraq. "In a short time this government has jeopardized an enormous amount of regard and respect in the world," said Kohl, whom Schroeder ousted in 1998 after 16 years as chancellor. Kohl made the comments in an interview published Friday in the right-leaning mass circulation Bild. He said he did not think Schroeder's...
