Article link above shows many nice pictures, but site is slow, so I only chose the two below. My suggested caption is underneath it. Feel free to suggest your own for the sake of levity. I've reduced the size for display; click for the full-size pic. "If you take one step back and slide to the right just a little, dear, the picture will be perfect." "I'm glad Georgia O'Keefe didn't see this."

One picture and several links. Note that on the Volcano LiveCams page, you can also see volcano cams around the world. Due to the report about Mt. St. Helens that happened over the weekend, I checked the St. Helens cam; and according to the picture on that page, it's supposed to be up on "Monday, September 28, 2004". Somebody did NOT realize that this was a leap year, apparently. So maybe it will be up by tomorrow in case St. Helens burps. Pic first, then links: Wild spattering from a collapsing Hornito (there are so many thoughts...) Lava flows in...

Martian teardrop carved in crater 18:04 24 August 04 NewScientist.com news service Wind sculpted basaltic sand dunes millions of years ago (Image: ESA/DLR/FU Berlin G. Neukum) Dark, rippling dunes of volcanic ash - similar to Hawaii's black sand beaches - cast a teardrop shape in an ancient Martian crater, reveal the latest images from Mars Express. Wind is likely to have carved the 12-kilometre-long tear shape a million or more years ago when the Martian atmosphere was thicker, says Gerhard Neukum, principal investigator of the High Resolution Stereo Camera on Europe's Mars orbiter. Now, the atmosphere has thinned so much...

This looks like Hawaii, but it's not (currently the Kilauea eruption does not have active ocean entries). This is the ocean entry of the lava flow from Piton de la Fournaise volcano on the island of La Reunion in the Indian Ocean (featured a couple of weeks ago because it also has spectacular waterfalls). So right now it has both spectactular waterfalls and lavafalls. Click the linked source above for a page with several additional javascripted images of the eruption. Two of them are aerial photographs apparently showing the lava flow crossing the ring road around the island.

I haven't posted Kilauea volcano pictures for a little while, but the eruption just keeps on going and going. It had been sending lava onto the coastal flats, so there hadn't been any recent ocean entries, but a fairly large flow called the 'Banana' flow reached the ocean yesterday. I've posted two nice pictures, but for fans of molten lava, there are a lot of new ones on the linked site above.

The Bosporus fascinates me. Click the link for related article and link to a slightly larger image. Istanbul, Turkey: The Crossroads of Europe and Asia Nyamuragira (Zaire) is currently erupting. Here's a picture of what it looked like in 2002. (It's also spelled Nyamulagira.) Here's the report from May 8: Goma Volcano Observatory is announcing the beginning of a new eruption of Nyamulagira. Strong volcanic tremor signalled the onset of eruptive activity on May 8. Activity seems to have begun in the summital caldera of Nyamulagira and later propagated on the North flank. This volcano had shown several seismic swarms...
  • Study Finds Signs of Life in Ancient Lava

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Tiny, bacteria-like organisms made their home in hardened lava some 3.5 billion years ago, scientists reported on Friday in a finding that pushes the limits of when life is known to have started on Earth. The microbes, known as archaea, dug into volcanic rock to form long tubes. A team from the United States, Norway, Canada, and South Africa found evidence of the lava-burrowing archaea in 3.5 billion-year-old rock in South Africa. "Our evidence is among the oldest evidence for life found so far," said Hubert Staudigel, a research geophysicist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at...

Scientists CloselyMonitoring YellowstoneProLiberty.com12-23-3   Recent eruptions, 200 degree ground temperatures, bulging magma and 84 degree water temperatures prompt heightened srutiny of park's geothermal activity...  BILLINGS, Mont. -- Yellowstone National Park happens to be on top of one of the largest "super volcanoes" in the world. Geologists claim the Yellowstone Park area has been on a regular eruption cycle of 600,000 years. The last eruption was 640,000 years ago making the next one long overdue. This next eruption could be 2,500 times the size of the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption. Volcanologists have been tracking the movement of magma under...

ELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. — The rolling pine forests, snowcapped mountains and crisp fall evenings here tend to make people forget the fact that the park sits atop a huge simmering underground volcano. But new geologic events have served up reminders. In a few days in July, acidic ground water dissolved parts of the unpaved trails in the Norris Geyser Basin, and the ground temperature of the trails shot up to 200 degrees from the usual maximum of 80. Park officials closed nearly half of the basin's trails, and they remain shut. On Aug. 21, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake shook the...
