John E. Holden had been a Marine Corsair fighter pilot during WWII. He survived the war, and the many years that followed, before passing away last week at the age of 93. Holden fell from a window at a retirement community in Lancaster, PA. In the obituary, which he wrote himself according to the Lancaster Intelligencer Journal, Holden's sense of humor was definitely in evidence. The former fighter pilot described a life "filled with endless laughter and debauchery." He mentions receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Medal for actions in Okinawa in 1945, but also said there was...

Tori Kovach of Aberdeen, left, is a regular feature on downtown streets, often seen near the Wishkah Bridge holding signs protesting the war in Iraq or chastising President Bush. On Wednesday, Sgt. Brendan Chamburs, the Marine Corps recruiter stationed in Aberdeen, saw Kovach holding a protest sign near Quizno’s and decided to stage a counter-demonstration. He had his sign made at Coast Line Signs. Kovach was unmoved, saying, “I believe in the military, but I think the military is being misused. They are dying for a lie.” A few people honked their horns as they drove by, but not everyone...

Back on June 6th, we, the Freeple, helped propel OO-RAH Magazine, a site featuring the US Marines and their stories, a well-deserved 7.049 rating out of 10 on the coolness scale. To put that in perspective, only five sites got a 6 or higher rating in June, and only two of those five were in the sevens. Now we have an opportunity to vote for OO-Rah as Cool Site of the Month, so go forth and give 'em your vote! Please note you're also helping a fellow Freeper; outlawcam is the webmaster at OO-RAH.
