Feb. 21 (UPI) -- A Texas man who bought a second-hand CD from a small-town thrift shop made a surprising discovery inside the case -- a Polaroid photo of President John F. Kennedy on the day of his assassination. George Rebeles said he was at the Souls Harbor Thrift Store in Ferris when he decided to buy Bachman Turner Overdrive's The Anthology on CD. Rebeles said he didn't open the CD case until about a month after the purchase, and he discovered an object inside that he soon realized was a Polaroid photo. The photo depicted Kennedy riding in his...

Two local TV news outlets, WFAA and CBS11, picked up a story this week that was first reported on the Dallas Police Department’s Facebook page. On the surface, it reads like a feel-good story: On December 2, an adorable K9 named Ballentine identified a piece of carry-on luggage at Dallas Love Field Airport that contained $100,000 in cash. Police seized the money and posted a photo of the dog with stacks of cash laid out on a table. Good boy. Case closed. But not so fast. According to the reports, the money belonged to a 25-year-old woman from Chicago,...

Women at Love Field 'acting suspiciously' Dallas police and federal terrorism officials are investigating two women, both dressed in camouflage pants under their traditional Muslim robes and scarves, who were seen conducting what appeared to be surveillance and acting suspiciously at Dallas Love Field. One of the women, Kimberly "Asma" Al-Homsi, 42, of Arlington, who is on probation for a 2005 Garland road rage incident involving a fake grenade, is said to have long-range assault rifle and explosives training, according to a Dallas police intelligence bulletin issued March 5. "I'm a trained sniper and proud of it," Ms. Al-Homsi said...

DALLAS - With one already considered 'dangerous' by the United States government, two women became the center of more critical attention after their alleged actions at Dallas Love Field caught the interest of the FBI and Dallas Police Department. Sources said in February, Kimberly "Asma" Al-Homsi, 42, and Aisha Abdul-Rahman Hamad, 50, allegedly scoped out Dallas Love Field in a manner classic of surveying an area. Al-Homsi was already under surveillance and is on the government's no fly list since being involved in a road rage incident back in December of 2005. Officials said during the incident she held up...

WASHINGTON- Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, trying to preserve a hard-fought compromise on the Wright Amendment, wants U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to back off any review of the agreement that would eventually repeal restrictions at Dallas Love Field. Hutchison sent a terse letter to Gonzales on Tuesday asking him to recuse the department from any input on a bill she sponsored. The bill contains the agreement forged by Dallas and Fort Worth officials, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Her letter was triggered by a Justice Department staff memo circulated on Capitol Hill last week that...

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports JetBlue and Northwest Airlines will actively fight the Wright Amendment compromise reached by American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and D/FW leaders. The Star-Telegram reports the airlines claim the compromise was hatched in a back room and would stifle competition. Just as the mayors of Dallas and Fort Worth huddled in Washington with airline executives and congressional leaders, word of the first opposition takes flight. JetBlue and Northwest said they were never invited to the settlement talks. The compromise, opening up Dallas Love Field to nationwide flights over eight years, was struck between...

A majority of the Dallas City Council supports either an immediate or eventual full repeal of the Wright amendment – as long as some gates at Love Field are eliminated, District 10 representative Bill Blaydes said Monday. "There is a general consensus across the council that we're willing to give up some of the gates, and the mayor seems to be buying into it," Mr. Blaydes said. But most of his colleagues declined to take a public stand on the flight restrictions on Monday. And Mayor Laura Miller, who as early as last fall suggested demolishing the gates in the...

Several Dallas City Council members, including Mayor Laura Miller, say they are surprised and upset that Dallas Love Field has been dipping into its reserves to pay off deficits. Now they want answers. Airport officials say they are trying to cut costs and raise revenues, looking at everything from parking rates to landing fees. On Wednesday, council members Mitchell Rasansky and Angela Hunt sent a joint memo to City Manager Mary Suhm asking for a full council briefing "as soon as possible in January." Hunt said she has also asked the city auditor's office to examine how the airport...

(CBS 11 News) CBS 11 News has learned the City of Dallas is negotiating with Southwest and Continental Airlines to raise landing fees at Dallas Love Field. WASHINGTON, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Congressional negotiators agreed on Thursday to exempt Missouri from restrictions on direct air service from Dallas Love Field to several states, an issue that has Texas rivals' Southwest Airlines and American Airlines locked in a bitter fight. House-Senate lawmakers hammering out details of a spending bill for transportation and treasury programs agreed to the Missouri exemption to a 26-year-old law called the Wright Amendment. The exemption was sponsored by Sen. Christopher Bond, a Missouri Republican. Congress has approved similar waivers for other states in the past. Budget powerhouse Southwest wants the Wright Amendment repealed to...

WASHINGTON -- Two senators unveiled a bill Tuesday aimed at closing Dallas Love Field to commercial air traffic, forcing Southwest Airlines Co. to move to D/FW Airport to serve North Texas. The bill, from Sens. James Inhofe, R-Okla., and Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, came on the same day that separate legislation was introduced in the Senate to allow long-haul flights from Love Field. Aviation experts and Senate aides said the Inhofe-Harkin proposal was unlikely to be enacted. But the mounting opposition underscored a fight had been joined in the Senate and that Southwest and its allies face a tough political battle...

Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly said Friday an effort by Tennessee lawmakers to change the 1979 law that bans direct flights from Dallas Love Field to Nashville could help Love Field grow. The so-called Wright amendment was enacted in 1979 to benefit the then-new Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. It permitted carrier service from Love Field and points within Texas and the neighboring states of Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. In 1997 it was modified to permit flights to Alabama, Kansas and Mississippi as well. The Tennessee proposal faces an uncertain fate in Congress. Texas Senator Kay Bailey...

Southwest Airlines Co., the largest low-fare carrier, flew more U.S. passengers than its competitors in May, the first time a discount airline has led the industry, the U.S. Department of Transportation said. Southwest carried 6.5 million passengers in the month, compared with 6.3 million by Delta Air Lines Inc. and 6.2 million by American Airlines, the department said Tuesday. "They're steadily increasing in numbers," Morten Beyer, chief executive of an airline consulting firm, said of Southwest. "They will be number one by any standard" by 2006 or 2007, said Beyer. Southwest is not a client of his firm, Morten Beyer...
