Natural gas probably isn’t running your car, but it soon may be lubricating your engine. Royal Dutch Shell has produced motor oil from natural gas, a product that is now available in stores, the company will announce Friday. The product was made possible by Shell’s $19 billion Pearl Gas-to-Liquids facility in Qatar, where the company converts natural gas into a variety of fuels and feedstocks. Materials from Pearl are used to make diesel fuel and plastics, for example. Shell began producing base oil at Pearl in 2012. Base oil is typically derived from crude oil and is used to make...

Scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego have found a layer of liquefied molten rock in Earth's mantle that may be acting as a lubricant for the sliding motions of the planet's massive tectonic plates. The discovery may carry far-reaching implications, from solving basic geological functions of the planet to a better understanding of volcanism and earthquakes. The scientists discovered the magma layer at the Middle America trench offshore Nicaragua. Using advanced seafloor electromagnetic imaging technology pioneered at Scripps, the scientists imaged a 25-kilometer- (15.5-mile-) thick layer of partially melted mantle rock below the edge of the...
  • Lubricating the drive

Much discussed among computer circles is the so-called end of Moore's Law and its predictions of ever-smaller, faster circuits. Less known is a challenge facing the next generation of hard disk drives: lubricant coatings that can hold up to faster speeds and denser data. Perfluoropolyethers (PFPEs), the current industry standard, are running up against the polymer's limits in protecting hard drives against daily wear and tear. So University of Illinois PhD candidate Wei Xiao developed an entirely new lubricant, based on inexpensive and abundant polyester. She presented her work today for the first time at the 228th national meeting of...
