The greatest collapse of a mighty state, a large human society and a fruitful civilization of which we possess a reasonably accurate record, has been immortalized by Edward Gibbon’s historical classic, The Decline and Fall of The Roman Empire. Henry Adams remarked that Gibbon did not really explain the fall; but this criticism is not altogether just. As the following excerpts from The Decline and Fall show, the philosophic historian offered a number of reflections on the symptoms and causes of the drama which he set out to describe: "This long peace and the uniform government of the Romans introduced...

I am 94 years old and like many of you, I am exhausted by politics and saddened by what I see happening to America. I had hoped it was time for me to move to the sidelines and let younger generations continue the fight to preserve America’s founding freedoms and values. But, like so many of us, I realized that I could not let myself walk away; the stakes are just too high. We cannot let the America we see today be what we leave to our children and grandchildren. Many of our once-great cities have devolved into lawlessness with...

As America's Independence Day nears, I have found myself increasingly thinking of Lloyd Marcus and what his passing has meant. It is difficult to believe that it has almost been a year since his sudden death from a pulmonary embolism on July 24, the day after he and his wife, Mary, celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary. So much has happened in America and around the world these last twelve months, and it saddens me that Lloyd isn't around to make sense of those events for us with the context and meaning that only he could provide. In the months leading...

“I woke up this morning thinking it was going to be another great day. I've been celebrating with friends, family and the community since I turned 90. I've told you about the gracious gift of $117 million that was collected and given in my honor to four charities that mean a lot to me. All that happiness blew up because I said in a newspaper interview that I have supported and will continue to support Donald Trump. Boom! Bernie Marcus, co-founder of Home Depot, says Wednesday’s shooting of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, officers, and others at a congressional baseball practice makes him “so worried about the life of the President of the United States.” In an interview on the Fox Business Network Wednesday, Marcus said “I wish that the president would sit down with the leadership of the Democratic Party and say guys, let’s cut it out. Let’s get together and let’s start working together and accomplish what has to be accomplished.” James T. Hodgkinson of Illinois fired dozens of rounds at some 45 Republican members of...

Tonight, Tonight was not just any night. Tonight there was no Hillary speech. Tonight, Tonight, America won tonight. And praise God, the Left was stopped where they are. We were told the press would announce her victory early; but no announcement happened and now its late at night. Donald Trump shined bright, We the People kicked Hillary's, Obama's, and their despicable mainstream media minion's butts, tonight. Yes, folks, my wife Mary and I are still on the campaign trail in a West coast hotel room celebrating Trump's victory and the GOP maintaining control of the House and Senate; a special...

From the outside, with its high minarets and bulbous Mughal-style dome, the Wilmersdorf mosque, located on Brienner Street in southwest Berlin, looks much the same as it did when it was built in the 1920s. But the institution, just like the city around it, has changed. Today, the mosque is a quiet place. It mainly serves as an information center: School children sometimes visit on field trips; it hosts interfaith brunches. A small community of Muslims regularly show up for Friday prayer. It’s all a far cry from the days when the Wilmersdorf mosque was the lively center of a...

It was after dark. I was taking a short cut to the convenience store through an alley. Ahead of me, a middle-aged white woman was walking down a side street and started to enter the alley. Upon realizing that I would be walking behind her, she made a quick turn out of the alley. Once inside the convenience store, I saw the woman come in. We were headed to the same destination, but she chose to take a different route. As a black man, should I be offended for being racially profiled? Well guess what? The night before, a late...

The Coalition for Children & Family and Hakshava are applying for a monthly permit to protest against Philip Marcus in Har Nof, Jerusalem. Organizers say Marcus is scheduled to speak at a parental rights conference being held tomorrow evening at the Israeli Bar on Daniel Frish #10 in Tel Aviv. “He has become a public figure against father's rights,” says “E”. “It is important that the public also hear the other side of the argument.” “E” refers to an article Marcus wrote in the Jerusalem Post (http://www.jpost.com/Opinion/Op-Ed-Contributors/Fathers-protest-is-misguided-344043). Philip Marcus first made headlines when a divorced father threw a shoe at...

Sarah Palin is right about impeaching President Barack Obama. No, not that the president should be impeached. But Palin is correct in arguing that, for those who assert that Obama has grievously abused his executive authority, impeachment is the proper course of action. (please see link for full article)

Pick a card, any card. Racist. Sexist. Homophobic. We all knew it was only a matter of time before Democrats/Liberals played one or more of their Big Three Cards to silence, intimidate and crush opposition to their latest power grab/tyrannical attack on our freedom. With a majority of Americans taking rancher Cliven Bundy's side against Obama's BLM thugs, Democrat Harry Reid concluded that it was time to play their old faithful, tried and true race card. As Gomer Pyle use to say, "Surprise. Surprise." We knew it was coming. This is how the Left rolls. When America rallied around Duck...

If you ever doubted that money outweighs principles in contemporary politics, then the case of Richmond campaign consultant Boyd Marcus should permanently erase such ambiguity in your mind. Marcus, a prominent figure in Virginia politics for two decades, made headlines in August when he abandoned a lifetime of supporting Republicans to endorse Democrat Terry McAuliffe for governor. McAuliffe’s team and Marcus trumpeted the conversion as an important political sign that mainstream Republicans were rejecting the tea party conservatism espoused by GOP candidate Ken Cuccinelli II. Instead, we learned Thursday, the primary motive was entirely mercenary. An e-mail was made public...

Obama's policies mean for America, especially for our children and future generations. In particular, the lack of job creation and rising home foreclosures are limiting the American dream for millions of families. Campaign tips from Cicero's brother sound awfully familiar It was a bitter and volatile campaign, with accusations of inconsistency, incompetence and scandal filling the air. Candidates competed to portray themselves as the true conservative choice, while voters fretted about the economy and war threatened in the Middle East. The year was 64 B.C., and Marcus Tullius Cicero was running for Roman consul. Cicero was a political outsider from a small town near Rome, but he was a brilliant man and gifted speaker, with a burning desire to gain the highest office in the ancient republic. As the campaign approached, his...
