ANNAPOLIS -- Despite intense encouragement by some state and national Republicans, Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele will heed the wishes of Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. and not challenge U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski in next year's elections. "No, I will not run for the United States Senate in 2004," Steele told The Gazette on Thursday. "I have to help my governor." The governor's opposition and Steele's unwillingness to run deflate the hopes in some GOP circles that Maryland's first black lieutenant governor would take on the entrenched three-term senator from East Baltimore. But by nixing the idea, Ehrlich (R)...

Tuesday was a massacre for the democrats. They had no message and the polling was horrible. I have always been skeptical about polls and it appears that most of the pre-election polls were off. So why did the republicans do so well? George Bush deserves much of the credit, but let's not forget about the great candidates we had. 90% od our candidates were experienced and did well in their debates. The democrats did have a message. It was "no" to whatever being asked. The get nothing done senate was another reason. No bills and no judges were coming out...

A careful look at Democratic gubernatorial candidate Kathleen Kennedy Townsend — her campaign's flirtation with hiring consultant Julius Henson to scare black voters into voting against Republican nominee Robert Ehrlich, her strident defense of affirmative action and her efforts to insinuate that Jewish Marylanders have no business voting for Republicans — suggests that sowing racial and ethnic discord are key components of her campaign.

Republican Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. leads Democrat Kathleen Kennedy Townsend 46 percent to 43 percent in the race for Maryland governor, according to a poll for Washington television station WRC-NBC4 released yesterday. The poll is the first to show Ehrlich with a lead in the tightening contest, although it has a margin of error of 4 percentage points, meaning the race remains a statistical tie, as other recent polls have suggested. It was conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc., which surveyed 625 likely voters statewide.

Efforts by Rep. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. to win over Jewish voters in Maryland, many of whom have traditionally voted Democratic in the past, may be paying off. Influential members of the Baltimore region's Jewish community say Ehrlich is gaining uncommonly strong support from Jewish Democrats in his bid to become Maryland's first Republican governor since the 1960s. And in Montgomery County, where he is far less known, Jewish voters are beginning to give him a look, leaders there say. Ehrlich says the support reflects that he's a Republican who bothers to ask Jews for their vote - something he...

[SNIP] Barksdale, 38, is one of four lawyers challenging six sitting Circuit Court judges in the nonpartisan judicial race, marking the first time since 1986 that incumbent judges are facing contested elections. "I have nothing but respect for the judiciary," he said. At the same time, Barksdale said, "If someone has the word 'judge' in front of their names, that doesn't mean they have more experience than some litigators in this county."

In a tally sure to further boost his confidence, Republican Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. raised five times more money in recent weeks than Democrat Kathleen Kennedy Townsend did, campaign finance reports show. Although Townsend's campaign for governor has raised more money overall - $6.8 million compared with Ehrlich's $4.5 million - what began this year as a chasm between their bank accounts appears to be closing quickly. During the most recent reporting period, from Aug. 7 to 25, Ehrlich raised more than $620,000... Townsend had a far quieter month, collecting about $126,000 during the reporting period. ...Ehrlich's success in the...

August 19, 2002 Wayne's World War on the Eastern Shore? Conservative Groups Target Moderate Gilchrest By Chris Cillizza Vacationland has suddenly turned into a political battleground. Rep. Wayne Gilchrest will face hard-charging attorney David Fischer in the Sept. 10 GOP primary in Maryland's 1st district, a seat made up almost entirely of the state's portion of the Eastern Shore, a rural area that is also a prime getaway spot for many in the mid-Atlantic region. Fischer's candidacy has gained significant national support over the past several weeks, as he has secured the backing of the National Rifle Association and Club...
