Since our last meeting we have been through a disastrous election. It is easy for us to be discouraged, as pundits hail that election as a repudiation of our philosophy and even as a mandate of some kind or other. But the significance of the election was not registered by those who voted, but by those who stayed home. If there was anything like a mandate it will be found among almost two-thirds of the citizens who refused to participate. Bitter as it is to accept the results of the November election, we should have reason for some optimism. For...

Wings made out of cardboard, parts attached with chicken wire – these are some of the features of the gimmicky ‘flying machines’ that took off from a 20-foot ramp and then plunge into the chilly waters of the Serpentine in Hyde Park, London, on Saturday. Red Bull’s “Flugtag 2008” is a competition in which home inventors “fly” their machines as far as they can off the starting ramp, while winning points for style, in an homage to the pioneers of aviation, the Daily Telegraph reported. But no matter how far they go, all will eventually meet a cold, watery end....

New turn for 'Click & Clack' and PBS Most TV series are propelled into the world by creative vision, ambition, all-out effort, and dreams of market domination. With "Click & Clack's As the Wrench Turns," the upcoming PBS cartoon featuring "Car Talk" stars Tom and Ray Magliozzi, it took something else - a whole lot of cajoling. Cajoling the proudly indolent Magliozzis into believing that a series about themselves would require minimal work on their part. Cajoling PBS into buying the concept of an animated show for grown-ups. And now comes the real trick: cajoling PBS viewers into sampling a...

As the incredible events of 1944 seem to drift farther from our minds and Che Guevara and MLK, Jr. are pressed into the children's brains by the baby boomers' offspring (the ones whose parents saved the Western World on those bloody days in Normandie)... This may offend some, but let's be honest. America is about everyone, true, but the reason we had a national identity and prosperity beyond imagination was because of Europeans. Everyone "helped" on the sidelines, but our ancestors did the heavy lifting and had the imagination to make it work. I am not aplogizing for not kow-towing...

Howdy, Well, once again I'm here looking for a bit of advise. I've been tinkering with the idea of getting a WiFi Internet Radio, but, as always, I'm overwhelmed with choices. I don't want to have to run it through the computer or anything like that. I want to be able to just tske it to the kitchen or the back sewing room, plug it in and turn it on. And, thanks to FReepers advise from the last time, I now have a wireless router-- a Linksys WRT100 range plus. In fact it was the router that got me thinking...

Mexico is beginning to look like a real war zone. The headlines in the news media are reminiscent of those from some of the most brutal days of the Iraq War. They speak of executions, beheadings, cryptic messages and dozens of people killed in a single day. But the war against drugs that Mexico is waging is not one that can easily eliminate the enemies. snip The Mexican government has made the fight against drugs its No. 1 priority.snip The rival drug cartels are killing each other off, law enforcement agents are hunting down drug dealers, and their hit men...

How would you call it? Updated 6:00pm 6/5/08 (WSB Radio) -- The umpire who was hit during a championship baseball game in Stephens County is cautiously reacting to the incident. David Scott told Channel Two Action News, "It came as a surprise, disbelief more than anything. I'd say the video pretty much speaks for itself. Other than that, I really don't have anything to say about it. I'm currently under a doctor's care and still waiting for all the results to be evaluated." Scott's attorney says they're waiting for that medical evaluation to determine if they will take any legal...
